We estimate the effect of malaria on settlement and land use patterns in the Brazilian Amazon, where potential settlers were randomly assigned to plots in a newly opened settlement area. The random assignment allows us to estimate the risk of malaria on each plot based only on its characteristics. Using survey data, we find that a high malaria risk significantly reduces the probability that a p...

The faults of rotating machinery monitored by fixing the sensors on rotor directly brings some problems such as difficulty in fixing the sensors, poor universality and so on, while it brings some advantages such as rapidness, convenience and good universality and so on by fixing the sensors on the base. Since the base is far away from the fault source, the collected vibration signals are relati...

For a molecule moving near a single metal surface at equilibrium, following von Oppen and coworkers [N. Bode, S. V. Kusminskiy, R. Egger, and F. von Oppen, Beilstein J. Nanotechnol. 3, 144 (2012)] and using a nonequilibrium Green’s-function (NEGF) approach, we derive a very general form of electronic friction that includes non-Condon effects. We then demonstrate that the resulting NEGF friction...

We analyze a sample of multiple-exoplanet systems which contain at least 3 transiting planets detected by the Kepler mission (‘Kepler multiples’). We use a generalized Titius-Bode relation to predict the periods of 228 additional planets in 151 of these Kepler multiples. These Titius-Bode-based predictions suggest that there are, on average, 2± 1 planets in the habitable zone of each star. We e...

We develop match probability statistics to test the recurrences of gamma ray bursts in the BATSE catalog 1B and 2B. We do not find a signal of repetitions at the match level of 10 .

Normal probability plots are often used as an informal means of assessing the nonnormality of a set of data. One problem confronting persons inexperienced with probability plots is that considerable practice is necessary before one can learn to judge them with any degree of confidence. Some objective measure of the straightness of a probability plot would he helpful, especially for students jus...

A greater understanding of the development of powdery mildew epidemics on vines would improve disease management by making assessments of the risk of invasion more accurate. We characterized the spatiotemporal spread of epidemics in the vineyard, quantified their variability, and identified the factors responsible for it. We described changes in the probability of infection of a leaf in a plot ...

Local rules optimization in a mixed stand. We present a treemarking model based on local rules, which optimizes the structure of the stand. The stand is divided into plots with constant number of trees. A plot is described by the number of trees in diameter classes for each species. These variables are random variables and their probability law are modeled by a mixture of multinomial distributi...

Logging is a larger cause of adult tree mortality in northeastern U.S. forests than all other causes of mortality combined. We used Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data to develop statistical models to quantify three different aspects of aggregate regional forest harvest regimes: (1) the annual probability that a plot is logged, as a function of total aboveground tree biomass, (2) the fract...
