We study the nucleation of a new thermodynamic phase in pores and find that the nucleation often proceeds via two steps: nucleation of pore filling, and nucleation out of the pore. These two rates have opposing dependencies on pore size, resulting in a pore size at which the nucleation rate of the new phase is maximal. This finding is relevant to attempts to design and use porous media to cryst...

A series of nanometric isoreticular and/or functionalized analogues of the mesoporous environmentally-friendly iron(III) polycarboxylates MIL-100/101 have been successfully synthesized. Their exceptional pore size, of up to 68 Å, together with their relatively good stability in solvents, makes them promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis or inclusion of large molecules, among others.

During last years the interest for nanotechnology and mesoporous silica materials has increased due to benefits that these materials can provide. Typical characteristics of mesoporous materials are a large surface area and pore volume, well-ordered and uniform pores with adjustable pores between 2 and 50 nm. Pore dimensions are comparable to many biological molecules, like enzymes, and may ther...

Porosity and pore structure are important characteristics of tablets, since they influence mechanical strength and many other properties. This paper proposes an alternative method for the characterization of pore structure based on image analysis of SEM micrographs. SEM images were made of sodium chloride tablets made with three different particle sizes. The pore size distribution in these imag...

Mesoporous hydroxyapatites were syntesized by self-assembly method using Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as cationic surfactant and 1-dodecanethiol as pore expander with pore expander/surfactant mass ratio of 4.22 and synthesis temperature of 80 °C in different micellization pH. The field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) ...

In this study, in situ strength of concrete was determined through compression test of cores drilled out from laboratory cast beams. The apparent porosity and pore size distribution of the same concrete were determined through mercury intrusion porosimetry, performed on small-drilled cores. The normal-strength concrete mixes used in the experimental investigation were designed to exhibit a wide...

Finite control of pore size distributions is a highly desired attribute when producing porous materials. While many methodologies strive to produce such materials through one-pot strategies, oftentimes the pore structure requires post-treatment modification. In this study, modulation of pore size in cobalt-silica systems was investigated by a novel, non-destructive, self-templated method. These...

The 70SiO2-15TiO2-15ZrO2 membrane was prepared by a sol-gel procedure. The corrosion behavior of microporous toplayers along with the membrane characterization in terms of pore size, surface area, pore volume and weight loss is described. The final ceramic membrane with a thickness of 400 nm and uniform surface was obtained. This membrane confirmed the fine microporous characteristic with mean ...

in this work, a simple and effective way to modify the support surface is developed and a nanostructure ceramic support to facilitate deposition of a defect-free overlying micro and meso (nano) porous membrane is obtained. to achieve high performance nanocomposite membranes, average pore size of outer surface of support was reduced by dip-coating in submicron and nano α-alumina slurries. in thi...
