Lipopolysaccharides free P[3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB)-co-3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV)] production was achieved using recombinant Corynebacterium glutamicum harboring polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biosynthetic genes from Ralstonia eutropha. Cells grown on glucose with feeding of propionate as a precursor of 3HV unit accumulated 8-47wt% of P(3HB-co-3HV). The 3HV fraction in the copolymer was varied from 0 t...

The first draft genome of Halostagnicola sp. A56, isolated from the Andaman Islands is reported here. The A56 genome comprises 3,178,490 bp in 26 contigs with a G+C content of 60.8%. The genome annotation revealed that A56 could have potential applications for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate or bioplastics.

Pseudomonas sp. LFM046 is a medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHAMCL) producer capable of using various carbon sources (carbohydrates, organic acids, and vegetable oils) and was first isolated from sugarcane cultivation soil in Brazil. The genome sequence was found to be 5.97 Mb long with a G+C content of 66%.

Pseudomonas putida CA-3 accumulates polyphosphate (polyP) and medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoate (mclPHA) concurrently under nitrogen limitation. Five other mclPHA-accumulating Pseudomonas strains are capable of simultaneous polyP and mclPHA biosynthesis. It appears that polyP is not the rate-limiting step for mclPHA accumulation in these Pseudomonas strains.

Two strains of Bacillus, B. cereus E41 and B. anthracis F34, were isolated from a salt lake in Aïn M'lila-Oum El Bouaghi, eastern Algeria, and Ain Baida-Ouargla, southern Algeria, respectively. Their genomes display genes for the production of several bioactive secondary metabolites, including polyhydroxyalkanoate, iron siderophores, lipopeptides, and bacteriocins.

BACKGROUND Tissue engineering is a new approach, whereby techniques are being developed to transplant autologous cells onto biodegradable scaffolds to ultimately form new functional tissue in vitro and in vivo. Our laboratory has focused on the tissue engineering of heart valves, and we have fabricated a trileaflet heart valve scaffold from a biodegradable polymer, a polyhydroxyalkanoate. In th...

This editorial paper provides a synopsis of the contributions to the Bioengineering special issue "Advances in Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) Production". It illustrates the embedding of the issue's individual research articles in the current global research and development landscape related to polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). The article shows how these articles are interrelated to each other, reflect...
