A British research team has recently compared the cost-effectiveness of different measures to reduce fine particulate matter (PM10) pollution in London. The authors used the Urban Scale Integrated Assessment Model (USIAM). This software tool enables to bring together data on air pollutant sources, their respective contributions to atmospheric concentrations, and human exposure, together with in...

The aim of the paper is to compare results obtained by experiments and numerical analysis for vehicle exhaust pollutant emissions and concentrations in urban area. Special attention was plaid to problems of vehicle pollutant emission and dispersion caused by cold start. For description of emission sources a multi-point model was applying. In the model every vehicle is treated as a single moveab...

This paper presents (1) general considerations related to the development of two mathematical models for non-conservative transport of nitrate and ammonium under unsteady water flow conditions; (2) their application to predict the transport of pollutant in both customary and accidental pollutant release circumstances; and (2) a discussion related to models use in water quality management. The s...

Eutrophication of coastal oceans as a result of the delivery of excess nutrients by rivers is a critical environmental issue on local, regional, and global scale. Japanese agriculture has created high nitrogen surpluses in agricultural lands due to the increasing rate of chemical fertilizer application and the increase of livestock. In this study, to estimate the nitrogen load exported to Koise...

We propose to apply computerized tomography to measure a two-dimensional pollutant-concentration map over an area that may contain several potential sources of pollution. A tunable-laser source at the center of the area generates secondary or virtual light sources around the perimeter of the area that play the role of x rays in conventional computerized tomography of the human body.

RATIONALE Certain outdoor air pollutants cause asthma exacerbations in children. To advance understanding of these relationships, further characterization of the dose-response and pollutant lag effects are needed, as are investigations of pollutant species beyond the commonly measured criteria pollutants. OBJECTIVES Investigate short-term associations between ambient air pollutant concentrati...

Unsealed roads and tracks are potentially significant sources of diffuse pollutants, particularly sediment. Identifying critical diffuse pollutant sources and their transport potential can greatly improve catchment-scale water quality management. This study describes the application and ongoing development of a road erosion and sediment transport model in the Moruya-Deua and Tuross River catchm...
