This article presents data which support the use of a cognitive anthropology research method, "pile sorting," to compliment and enhance the qualitative and quantitative evaluation tools used by drug preve~tion programs. The method was employed in the assessment of a Drug, Alcohol, and AiDS prevention program conducted by a community based organization. It produced significant information on the...
A recent survey in northern Mexico found that 52.8% of adult Tarahumara women were overweight. A process of “de-Indianization” of their diet was hypothesized. The present study aimed at exploring food and body shape perceptions as dimensions contributing to the role that Western acculturation could be playing in increasing overweight in this isolated indigenous population. Data were obtained fr...
The objective behind the “TWIN SORT” technique is to sort the list of unordered data elements efficiently and to allow efficient and simple arrangement of data elements within the data structure with optimization of comparisons and iterations in the sorting method. This sorting technique is effectively terminates the iterations when there is no need of comparison if the elements are all sorted ...
Underdeveloped tree crops (? 30 bone-dry tons ha?1) offer a main harvest of biomass-trees, which lack the size and form for producing log. However, about 1/3 available stems may yield at least one log, could significantly increase overall value harvest. Under those circumstances, it make sense to sort log-trees from biomass-trees an early stage, rather than having harvester or processor go thro...
Spike-sorting techniques attempt to classify a series of noisy electrical waveforms according to the identity of the neurons that generated them. Existing techniques perform this classification ignoring several properties of actual neurons that can ultimately improve classification performance. In this chapter, after illustrating the spike-sorting problem with real data, we propose a more reali...
Weight of the load and its characteristics is considered to be the important risk factor for low back disorders (LBD) among manual materials handlers. Determining weight of the load and the amount of load a person can lift is important in minimizing the incidence of LBD. Among various methods like isometric, isoinertial and isokinetic, isoinertial approach of lifting evaluation is best as it is...
We relate the pressure "dip" observed at the bottom of a sand pile prepared by successive avalanches to the stress profile obtained on sheared granular layers in response to a localized vertical overload. We show that, within a simple anisotropic elastic analysis, the skewness and the tilt of the response profile caused by shearing provide a qualitative agreement with the sand pile dip effect. ...
Article history: Received 12 September 2010 Accepted 27 September 2010 In this paper, the residual stress in quenched AISI 1045 steel was measured by a recently developed nanoindentation technique. Depth control mode was adopted to measure the residual stress. It was found that residual compressive stress was generated in the quenched steel. The material around nanoindents exhibits significant ...
Nowadays, in the civil engineering practice, the pile-building is the most universal type of foundation. It is usually associated with bridges, fly-overs and other civil engineering objects, industrial buildings, tall buildings, chimneys, tanks etc [1]. It is essential to control the quality of concrete piles. The most accepted weight-bearing capacity measurement technique is the static probe l...
