REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Osseous resorption of the flexor surface of the distal phalanx of the horse has been identified previously using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging; however, little is known about the prevalence and characteristics of this lesion. OBJECTIVES To establish the MR prevalence of resorptive lesions in the flexor surface of the distal phalanx and identify concurrent lesion...
PURPOSE Vascularized bone transplants resist infection and allow rapid healing but keeping small bony segments vascularized, as needed for a finger defect, is a challenge. The purpose of this article is to present a cohort of patients with traumatic intercalated compound bony defects in the fingers that were reconstructed by a vascularized toe phalanx (or part of a phalanx) in a single stage. ...
The Akhal-Teke is an ancient horse originat-ing from Asia where it was used by nomadic tribes and used as a warhorse. Lameness examinations require proper interpretation of clinical and radiographic findings. Therefore, understanding of normal radiographic findings of the foot is necessary. Although the radiographic appearance of the normal foot must be understood to recognize abnormalities ...
Plain radiography can help in confirming the clinical diagnosis of a subungual glomus tumour, as erosive changes in the distal phalanx are present in 22% of cases. Such changes will be more easily identified on a lateral radiograph with the painful finger and its contralateral counterpart pointing toward each other: discrete scalloping of the distal phalanx will thus be made more evident.
An evaluation was made of the ossification level of the metacarpal and phalangeal bones in human foetuses of both sexes from the 4th to the 9th month of gestation. Our results indicate that ossification of phalangeal bones 1 to 5 always started at the distal end of the phalanx and endochondral ossification prevailed in the proximal phalanx of the thumb.
OBJECTIVE To determine the best fit of a hamate osteochondral graft to reconstruct a palmar defect of a middle phalanx articular fracture using three-dimensional remodelling. METHODS The proximal middle phalanx and distal hamate articular surfaces of 10 cadaveric right hands were scanned using a three-dimensional laser scanner. A defect was marked on the middle phalanx digital image to simula...
Ungual cartilage ossification in the forelimb is a common finding in horses. Subtle abnormalities associated with the ungual cartilages can be difficult to identify on radiographs. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of 22 horses (23 forelimbs) with a fracture of the distal phalanx and ossified ungual cartilage were characterized and graded. All horses had a forelimb fracture. Eleven invol...
