The patella is a motorical important part of the feline stifle joint. By gliding proximally and distally inside trochlear groove, its position continually changes during each step mobility. Stifle diseases like patellar luxation, cruciate ligament rupture, or tendon disease as well consecutive surgical interventions may cause dislocation.

A two-year-old male Pomeranian dog was presented to a veterinary hospital due the side effects of surgical correction for patellar luxation. Stifle joint arthrodesis (SJA) performed on patient’s right leg using autologous bone-grafting techniques. The femur and tibial were angled 120–130°, an SJA plate fixed front two bones. After performing fusion limb, medial-patellar-luxation-(MPL)-correctiv...

The purpose of this study is to describe complications affecting the patella in patients with total or partial knee arthroplasty. We respectively analysed plain-film radiographs, as well as ultrasound images when acquired, in a consecutive series of 1272 patients. The mean interval from knee replacement to patellar complications was 5 years and 7 months (range, 5 months to 14 years). The compli...

Small breed dogs are 12 times more likely to develop medial patellar luxation (MPL) than large breed dogs and breed predisposition has been reported. Many surgical techniques are available for correction of patellar luxation in dogs. However, recent studies reported an 8% incidence of reluxation when traditional techniques are used. The relatively high frequency of major complications and patel...

The purpose of this study was to compare a trochlear block recession to a rotating dome trochleoplasty, a novel technique for the correction of patellar luxation in small animals. Twenty-eight limbs were used from 14 feline cadavers. With the stifles in flexion and extension, computed tomography was utilized to compare width and depth of the trochlea, medial trochlear ridge height, trochlear ar...

Objective: To report surgical technique, morphometric effects and clinical outcomes for tibial tuberosity transposition-advancement (TTTA), sulcoplasty and para-patellar fascial imbrication for management of concomitant medial patellar luxation (MPL) and cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease in 32 dogs. Study design: Case series. Methods: A previous technique for tibial tuberosity advancement...

Patellar luxation is the result of progressive structural abnormalities in the soft and/or skeletal tissues of the dog’s pelvic limbs. There is an alteration of the patella-trochlear groove interaction with negative effects on the stifle stability and extensor mechanism integrity, on the trochlear articular cartilage nutrition and the adequate trochlear depth and length development and maintena...

Originally the main idea was to obtain a stable patella, i.e., to stabilize the "slipping patella". In the past many conditions like patella alta, ligamentous laxity, PF bone hypoplasia, weakness of the quadriceps muscle, genu valgum or genu recurvatum were thought to predispose to patellar instability. For a long period muscle exercises were instituted to strengthen the weak m.vastus medialis ...
