Patellar duplication is a rare asymptomatic condition. The diagnosis is often made following a traumatic event associated with an injury to the knee extensor mechanism. The treatment is often surgical and consists in removal of the smaller part of the patella with tendon reinsertion. The presence and rupture of an intermediate tendon between the two parts of the patella have not been reported i...
Patella infera can cause knee pain and lead to patellofemoral osteoarthritis. Treatment is usually unsatisfactory. We describe a case of severe patella infera after operative treatment for fracture of the patella. We used Ilizarov external fixation and gradual lengthening of the patellar tendon. The patellar height was restored and the patient's symptoms were much improved.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of some commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on human tendon. Explants of human digital flexor and patella tendons were cultured in medium containing pharmacological concentrations of NSAIDs. Cell proliferation was measured by incorporation of 3 H-thymidine and glycosaminoglycan synthesis was measured by incorporat...
background: abnormal patellar height is associated with anterior knee pain and several conditions that affect the patellofemoral joint. the aim of this study was to 1) report the incidence of patella alta and patella baja and 2) investigate whether the normal limits of the insall-salvati ratio is applicable in adult middle-easterners. methods: a radiographic review of the lateral radiographs of...
Arthroscopic technique for lateral release is the most widely used procedure for the correction of recurrent dislocations of the patella. In the relevant literature, several complications of lateral release are described, but the spontaneous patellar tendon rupture has never been suggested as a possible complication of this surgical procedure. Patellar tendon rupture is a rather infrequent and ...
A 46-year-old man presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with left knee pain after being assaulted and landing on a flexed knee. On physical examination, the patient had a large effusion of his left knee and the patella was retracted proximally. He was unable to bear weight on his left leg, range his knee, or hold his leg up against gravity due to pain. The left extremity was neurovascularl...
Objective: Patella is a sesamoid bone which develops in the quadriceps tendon. It is an uncommon site for neoplasms. The most common primary tumors which involve patella are benign. These include chondroblastoma, giant cell tumor (GCT) and aneurysmal bone cyst. Malignant lesions are less common in patella. These encompass metastasis, osteosarcoma and hemangioendothelioma. The most common compla...
Background: The incidence of inferior pole fractures of patella is around 5% and the various treatment options include tension band wiring, circumferential wiring, or use of screw 1 . The traditional recommendation for severly comminuted inferior pole fractures is excision of the comminuted pole followed by reattachment of the patellar tendon with transosseous suture to the superior fragment 2 ...
INTRODUCTION Fracture of the patella, after harvesting the central third of the patellar tendon for a bone-tendon-bone autograft, is a rare complication. MATERIAL AND METHODS We made 1714 reconstructions of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee using bone-patellar tendon-bone technique, and 7 patients had fracture of the patella (0.42%). The fracture was immediately recognized in the pat...
