This study aimed at detecting possible patterns in the relationship between Anisosmotic Extracellular Regulation (AER) and Isosmotic Intracellular Regulation (IIR) in crustaceans and teleost fish from different habitats and evolutionary histories in fresh water (FW), thus different osmoregulatory capabilities, and degrees of euryhalinity. Crustaceans used were the hololimnetic FW Aegla schmitti...

Seagrass meadows are highly productive and ecologically important habitats in estuaries and coastal lagoons, and contain a variety of faunal communities, from which the caridean shrimps are a dominant component. The purpose of this work was to analyze the environmental parameters of water and sediments, with the biological components in seagrass epifaunal communities, from the Western Gulf of M...

A further new species of Periclimenaeus (Crustacea: Pontoniinae) from Heron Island, Queensland, Australia, is described and illustrated. Periclimenaeus colemani sp. nov., an ascidian associate, was collected from coral reef spur and groove zone and increases to 30 the numbers of Periclimenaeus known from Australia and to 17 the number of species known from Heron Island.

From January to December 1999, the diet of Noctilio leporinus (Linnaeus, 1758) was determined in a salt-water ecosystem, by analysing the feces of bats captured in mist nets. Of the 61 samples analyzed, most contained remains of fish (90.2%), followed by insects (70.5%) and crustaceous (29.5%). The most frequent fishes species were: silversides Atherinella brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825), a...

A second discovery of the echinoid associated shrimp species Diapontonia maranulus Bruce, 1986 is recorded from deep water off Curaçao, Leeward Islands of the Dutch Caribbean. The material is compared with the type description and paratypic material as well as with material of closely related species. A mtDNA COI barcode was obtained from the material. The systematic position of the genus is di...

A new pontoniine shrimp species, Eupontonia nudirostris sp. nov. (Crustacea: Decapoda: Palaemonidae: Pontoniinae), was found in association with the thalassematid spoon worm Listriolobus sp. (Echiura: Thalassematidae) in the mangrove littoral of Dam Bay of Tre Island, Nhatrang Bay, Vietnam. This is the first record of an association between symbiotic pontoniine shrimp and spoon worm as their ho...

In Brazil, studies with native freshwater prawn species were discontinued due to great importance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Therefore, it is necessary to continue investigations about our species, in order to develop technology adequate to our reality and in a future allow prawn farmers to culture other species. The aim of this study was to determine the fecundity and fertility of Macrobrac...

Two specimens of an undescribed species of pontoniine shrimp of the genus Periclimenaeus Borradaile 1915 from Maui Island, Hawaiian Islands, are described and illustrated, raising to three the number of species known from the Hawaiian Islands. The new species is remarkable for the greatly reduced molar process and sharp lateral cutting edge on the major second pereiopod dactyl and most closely ...
