Numerous microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses and fungi, inhabit the oral cavity, and it has been pointed out that poor oral hygiene and chronic periodontitis increase the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, the molecular mechanism whereby the risk of OSCC is increased under such conditions has not yet been clarified. Microbes in the oral cavity may elicit both innate and...

We formulated a chemically defined medium consisting of 14 inorganic salts, 23 amino acids, 23 vitamins and other factors, seven purines and pyrimidines, and glucose which would successfully support the growth of a wide variety of oral microorganisms. Of 204 oral isolates representing 20 genera and 60 species, 197 maintained viability through six serial transfers.

Microorganisms interact with each other within a community. Within the same community, some microorganisms tend to co-exist, whereas some others tend to avoid each other. The association among microorganisms can be revealed by computing the correlation between their abundance patterns that are measured through metagenomic sequencing across multiple communities. In this paper, we built an associ...

Samples were taken from blood accumulated in dental alveoli after surgical removal of mandibular third molars, from subgingival plaque of teeth with advanced periodontal destructions, from teeth with infected necrotic pulps, and from subjects suffering from angular cheilitis. Of the microorganisms subcultured from these samples, 116 strains were assayed for enzymes degrading fibrinogen and fibr...

Background and purpose: Decrease in the number of oral microorganisms leads to reduction in caries score. Bacterial therapy, such as using probiotic bacteria, is an alternative procedure in treatment of infections caused by microorganisms. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of probiotic and non-probiotic yogurt-drink on two common oral microorganisms. Materials and methods: In...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the effects of four different mouthrinse containing propolis solutions and mouthrinse containing 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) on oral microorganisms and human gingival fibroblasts. METHODS Four different solutions of propolis were prepared and propylene glycol and alcohol were used as solvents for each propolis sample. Mouthrinse containing propolis...

Objectives: This research work intends to clarify the role of artificial saliva, in particularly the role of mucin, a salivary protein, on the surface properties and adhesion ability of Candida spp. oral clinical isolates to abiotic surfaces. Methods: Four oral clinical isolates of Candida spp. were used: two Candida albicans strains (AC; AM) and two Candida parapsilosis strains (AD; AM2). The ...
