The availability of quantitative indexes describing beta-cell function in normal life conditions is important for the characterization of impaired mechanisms of insulin secretion in pathophysiological states. Recently, an oral C-peptide minimal model has been proposed and applied to subjects with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) during graded up-and-down glucose infusion protocols (40-min periods...
Introduction: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing daily all around the world and is a serious threat to the well-being of the community in terms of renal failure, cardiovascular disease, blindness, and neuropathy. The assessment of difference screening approaches is of great importance in this disease. We compared ADA and WHO criteria for the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Methods...
The interpretation of oral glucose tolerance tests is complicated by varying individual rates of absorption from the intestinal tract. Intravenous tests eliminate the absorption factor, but there is evidence that they may be less sensitive than oral tests in detecting impaired tolerance (Moyer and Womack, 1950). It was considered that a galactose tolerance test performed in parallel with a gluc...
FIG. l.-Glucose tolerance curves in Subjects 8 and 10, showing pronoi variation in peak blood sugar levels. this impairment, for treatment with a progestational agent alone does not alter glucose tolerance (Puchulu et al., 1967) or may even improve it (Benjamin and Casper, 1966). This suggested the possibility that changes in endogenous oestrogen levels occurring during the normal menstrual cyc...
The oral glucose tolerance test and meal tolerance test are common clinical tests of the glucose-insulin system. Several mathematical models have been suggested as means to extract information about beta-cell function from data from oral tolerance tests. Any such model needs to be fairly simple but should at the same time be linked to the underlying biology of the insulin-secreting beta-cells. ...
21 The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and meal tolerance test are common clinical tests of the 22 glucose-insulin system. Several mathematical models have been suggested as means to extract 23 information about beta-cell function from data from oral tolerance tests. Any such model needs 24 necessarily to be fairly simple but should at the same time be linked to the underlying biology of the...
We present a minimal model for analyzing Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) data base on system of 5 ODEs. The model has 4 unknown parameters which are inferred using a Bayesian approach. Preliminarily results are shown with three real patient data.
OBJECTIVE The C57Bl/6J (Bl/6J) mouse is the most widely used strain in metabolic research. This strain carries a mutation in nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (Nnt), a mitochondrial enzyme involved in NADPH production, which has been suggested to lead to glucose intolerance and beta-cell dysfunction. However, recent reports comparing Bl/6J to Bl/6N (carrying the wild-type Nnt allele) und...
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS — The Reykjavı́k Study, a population-based cohort study during 1967–1997, recruited 19,381 participants aged 33–84 years who were followed until 2002. Oral glucose tolerance tests and chest X-rays were obtained from all participants. Cases were defined in accordance with World Health Organization criteria for type 2 diabetes or AGR (impaired glucose tolerance or impai...
