The last stage of orthodontic treatment is occlusal finishing. This complex and subtle treatment period demands careful reflection by orthodontists in order for them to achieve an optimal occlusion. Elastodontic concept is a straightforward therapeutic tactic, whose essence is a considered and individualised approach to treatment within a well-structured plan. Elastodontic concept enables ortho...

In this contribution we discuss central and autonomous control of production networks. We provide a number of parameters that influence the comparative effectiveness of these two methods. Further, the results concerning stability of the production networks are discussed and it is shown, how the central planning methods, implemented into mathematical models with the help of optimal control theor...

Anti-angiogenic therapy is a novel treatment approach in cancer therapy that aims at preventing a tumor from developing its own blood supply system that it needs for growth. In this paper a mathematical model for anti-angiogenic treatments based on a biologically validated model by Hahnfeldt, Panigrahy, Folkman and Hlatky is analyzed as an optimal control problem and a full solution of the prob...

We propose and analyze an optimal control problem where the control system is a mathematical model for tuberculosis (TB) with different post-exposure interventions considered. We analyze the impact of transmission intensity on the control interventions and show that optimal control solutions reduce the number of active TB cases.

In this paper, an approach for the computation of bounds on parametric model uncertainty for robust control design is proposed. The approach uses μ sensitivities to identify which uncertain parameters in the model are most critical in terms of closed-loop robustness objectives. Using skewed μ analysis tools, the maximum possible uncertainty bounds for model parameters which are most difficult o...

The article overviews current trends in research studies related to reliability prediction and prognostics. The trends are organized into three major types of prognostic models: failure data models, stressor models, and degradation models. Methods in each of these categories are presented and examples are given. Additionally, three particular computational prognostic approaches are considered; ...

We present a model of motor learning based on a combination of Operational Space Control and Optimal Control. Anticipatory processes are used both in the learning of the dynamic model of the system and in the coordination between both types of control. In order to illustrate the proposed model and associated control method, we apply these principles to the control of a simplified virtual humano...

Mathematical modelling of infectious diseases has shown that combinations of isolation, quarantine, vaccine and treatment are often necessary in order to eliminate most infectious diseases. However, if they are not administered at the right time and in the right amount, the disease eliminationwill remain a difficult task. Optimal control theory has proven to be a successful tool in understandin...

In this paper we present a novel formulation for the optimal control of discrete event dynamic processes which represent production systems with unreliable machines and buffers of finite capacity. We derive an optimum control strategy that is critically based on the fact that the discrete event dynamic behavior of the system is approximatively represented with a hybrid model. We introduce a det...

An adaptive backstepping sliding mode controller. wluch combincs both the merits of adaptive backstepping control and sliding mode control, is proposed to control the mover position of a linear induction motor (LIM) drive to compensate for the uncertainties including the friction force. First, the dynamic model of an indirect field-oriented LIM drive is derived. Then, a backstepping sliding mod...
