PURPOSE To establish normative magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (MRDTI) data in the pediatric optic nerve and compare to pathologic conditions both intrinsic and extrinsic to the anterior optic nerve pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective analysis of MRDTI at 3.0T in children ages 0-18 with both normal imaging studies and with pathologic conditions either arising from the o...
Supported eText for students with visual impairments in mathematics has a promising, emerging literature base, although little of the existing research focuses on implementation within a classroom setting. This qualitative study sought to understand the use of supported eText to deliver algebra to students with visual impairments enrolled in algebra mathematics courses. The study also sought to...
Central nervous system (CNS) lesions, mainly involving the meninges, are found in up to 16% of autopsy studies of patients with known sarcoidosis [1]. Primary CNS sarcoid granuloma without systemic disease is seen in only about 5% of patients [2]. The characteristic MRI appearance of chiasmal sarcoidosis is peripheral contrast enhancement resulting from meningeal involvement. We report a rare c...
In 2 earlier sets of experiments, the author reported that shape discrimination in an otherwise empty visual field is facilitated when the target shape is preceded by a valid spatial precue (J. M. Henderson, 1991; J. M. Henderson & A. D. Macquistan, 1993). L. Shiu and H. Pashler (1994) recently suggested that these earlier results were due to the presence of multiple posttarget pattern masks. T...
Children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) develop low-grade brain tumors throughout the optic pathway. Nearly 50% of children with optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) experience visual impairment, and few regain their vision after chemotherapy. Recent studies have revealed that girls with optic nerve gliomas are five times more likely to lose vision and require treatment than boys. To determine the...
BACKGROUND Childhood optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) are low-grade neoplasms intrinsic to the optic nerve, optic chiasm, tracts, and radiations. The management of OPGs is still a highly controversial topic among neuro-ophthalmologists. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION Authors' personal experience and literature review. RESULTS This review describes our current understanding of the behavior of OPGs and dis...
Paediatric optic pathway gliomas are low-grade brain tumours characterized by slow progression and invalidating visual loss. Presently there is no strategy to prevent visual loss in this kind of tumour. This study evaluated the effects of nerve growth factor administration in protecting visual function in patients with optic pathway glioma-related visual impairment. A prospective randomized dou...
A case is reported of an optic nerve glioma with a marked degree of arachnoid hyperplasia which was initially diagnosed as an optic nerve meningioma. Hyperplasia of the arachnoid was also the underlying cause for expansion of the optic canal. The relationship between arachnoid hyperplasia in optic nerve glioma and meningioma of the optic nerve sheath in childhood is discussed.
