Previous studies have shown that oscillations of the metabolism can occur in cardiomyocytes under conditions simulating ischemia/reperfusion. It is not known whether they can also occur during real ischemia with near-anoxic oxygen tension. Here, using oxygen clamp in on-chip picochambers, we exposed single resting cardiomyocytes to near anoxia (pO(2) < 0.1 mm Hg). We show that at near anoxia, t...

Recently there has been a strong interest in cross-frequency coupling, the interaction between neuronal oscillations in different frequency bands. In particular, measures quantifying the coupling between the phase of slow oscillations and the amplitude of fast oscillations have been applied to a wide range of data recorded from animals and humans. Some of the measures applied to detect phase-am...

2 While odorant evoked oscillations in the vertebrate olfactory bulb have been studied extensively, information about their possible cognitive role has been missing. Using voltage sensitive dye imaging we show that repeated odorant presentations with interstimulus intervals of 2-12 seconds had dramatic and diverse effects on the three oscillations that occur in the turtle olfactory bulb. Two of...

Tetanic stimulation of the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices can induce gamma frequency population oscillations (30-100 Hz) after a latency of 50-150 msec that are synchronized to within 1-2 msec when simultaneous stimuli are delivered to two sites 2 mm or more apart. When tetanic stimuli, twice-threshold for eliciting gamma oscillations, are used, new phenomena occur. (1) After a period of ...

Oscillations are a key to achieving dynamic behavior and thus occur in biological systems as diverse as the beating heart, defecating worms, and nascent somites. Here we report pervasive, large-amplitude, and phase-locked oscillations of gene expression in developing C. elegans larvae, caused by periodic transcription. Nearly one fifth of detectably expressed transcripts oscillate with an 8 hr ...

We investigate feedback control of the cooperative dynamics of two coupled neural oscillators that is induced merely by external noise. The interacting neurons are modeled as FitzHugh-Nagumo systems with parameter values at which no autonomous oscillations occur, and each unit is forced by its own source of random fluctuations. Application of delayed feedback to only one of two subsystems is sh...

ion Abstract—time is viewed as the medium in which events occur; no reference is made to ‘past,’ ‘present,’ or ‘future’ Concrete—Not all parts in the sequence of events can be experienced at the same time (e.g., gestation or metamorphosis unfolds over time) Subjectivity Objective—time is based upon the oscillations of subatomic particles; is independent

Phospholipid-coated ultrasound contrast agents may deflate or even collapse because of stress resulting from ultrasound-induced oscillations. In this work we investigate the behavior of isolated contrast agent microbubbles during prolonged ultrasound excitation. Isolated microbubbles placed in a thin capillary tube were excited with hundreds of ultrasound pulses at a low mechanical index, and t...

The KamLAND reactor antineutrino experiment has detected a 3.4σ flux suppression relative to the expectation if no neutrino oscillations occur. We combine Kam-LAND data with solar neutrino data and show that the LMA solution is the only viable oscillation solution to the solar neutrino problem at the 4.4σ C. L.

Experiments on the nontrivial collective dynamics and phase synchronization of populations of nonidentical chaotic electrochemical oscillators are presented. Without added coupling no deviation from the law of large numbers is observed. Deviations do arise with weak global or short-range coupling; large, irregular, and periodic mean field oscillations occur along with (partial) phase synchroniz...
