Mutual Exclusion Bootstrapping (MEB) was designed to overcome the problem of semantic drift suffered by iterative bootstrapping, where the meaning of extracted terms quickly drifts from the original seed terms (Curran et al., 2007). MEB works by extracting mutually exclusive classes in parallel which constrain each other. In this paper we explore the strengths and limitations of MEB by applying...
We present an N -process algorithm for mutual exclusion under read/write atomicity that has O(1) time complexity in the absence of contention and (logN) time complexity under contention, where \time" is measured by counting remote memory references. This is the rst such algorithm to achieve these time complexity bounds. Our algorithm is obtained by combining a new \fast-path" mechanism with an ...
This paper presents an algorithm for achieving mutual exclusion in Distributed System. The proposed algorithm is a betterment of the already existing Token Ring Algorithm, used to handle mutual exclusion in Distributed system. In the already existing algorithm, there are few problems, which, if occur during process execution, then the distributed system will not be able to ensure mutual exclusi...
We show how the synchronous programming language Esterel can be extended by a new statement to implement mutual exclusive code sections. We also show how the thereby extended Esterel language can be translated back to standard Esterel and we prove the correctness of this transformation. Additionally, we show that the translation fits well into different verification approaches.
The problem of mutual exclusion in distributed systems has attracted considerable attention over the last two decades. The mutual exclusion problem requires that, at a time, only one of the contending processes be allowed to enter its critical section (CS). A number of solutions have been provided to the mutual exclusion problem in distributed systems. Different algorithms have used different t...
The mutual exclusion (MX) paradigm can be used as a building block in many practical problems such as group communication, atomic commitment and replicated data management where the exclusive use of an object might be useful. The problem has been widely studied in the research community since one reason for this wide interest is that many distributed protocols need a mutual exclusion protocol. ...
Mutual exclusion is not solvable in an asynchronous message-passing system where processes are subject to crash failures. Delporte-Gallet et. al. determined the weakest failure detector to solve this problem when a majority of processes are correct. Here we identify the weakest failure detector to solve mutual exclusion in any environment, i.e., regardless of the number of faulty processes. We ...
The k-local mutual exclusion is a generalization of local mutual exclusion problem introduced by Attiya et al.. In k-local mutual exclusion, it is assumed that the k identical copies of a resource are shared among the geographically close nodes. The paper proposes a solution to the k-local mutual exclusion problem in MANETs. The algorithm uses a leader-based approach and the leader is equipped ...
The term mutual exclusion is used to designate an extreme form of interference which often occurs when two phage particles attack the same host cell. The cell liberates numerous particles of one of the parental types and not a single particle of the other parental type (Delbruck and Luria, 1942; Dulbriick, 1945). Mutual exclusion is the rule when the two infecting particles are very dissimilar....
One way of characterizing non-token-based mutual exclusion (m.e.) algorithms is in terms of the underlying information structure. The information structure for a given m.e. algorithm specifies which particular processes interact with which other processes before entering their critical sections, and which processes they interact with when leaving their critical sections. By focusing on the info...
