Based on genetic and morphometric differences, Dietzen et al. (2003) [1] proposed to separate the Gran Canaria Robin from E. r. superbus of Tenerife as a new taxon in a nomenclaturally invalid way. Here, we provide a formal description of the new subspecies (Erithacus rubecula marionae subsp. nov.) in accordance with the rules of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature.
Several plant characteristics, such as fruit production, nutrient reward, secondary compounds, and fruit color display, affect fruit choice by birds. On the other hand, several bird attributes affect their efficiency as dispersers. Here we investigate the ornithochoric seed dispersal of Pera glabrata Schott (Euphorbiaceae) in a cerrado fragment in southeastern Brazil. A set of bird attributes, ...
We describe a new species of forest robin from the Gamba Complex in southwest Gabon. This common bird, Stiphrornis pyrrholaemus sp. nov., inhabits primary lowland forest and forages on or near the ground like the other members of the genus Stiphrornis of central and western Africa. Unique phenotypic features of the new species include the male's bright orange chin, throat, and breast, creamy ye...
The feeding ecology of Turdus pelios was studied from field observations and gizzard contents. Quantitative data on feeding were obtained from repeated standard "fixed route" walks and observational points at seven sites from January to December 1998 on 5065ha at the Obafemi Awolowo University campus, Ile-Ife (7 degrees 20' N, 4 degrees 33' E). Walks (each lasting about two hours) were started ...
Ab tract.—The genus Monticola consists of 13 putative species with distributions throughout Eurasia and the sub-Saharan region of Africa. As such, this genus provides an excellent model with which to explore historical intercontinental movements and forces driving speciation in southern Africa. To address these questions, we reconstructed a hypothesis of species relationships using the mitochon...
The Wood Thrush Hylocichla mustelina (Muscicapidae: Turdinae) was studied on wintering grounds in the rainforest of southern Veracruz, Mexico, using mist netting, radiotelemetry, and field observation. Data were collected during three boreal winters (primarily November-March), and 46 individuals received transmitters. All sex and age classes were present, but difficulties in aging and sexing di...
