We, for the first time, report that many Mn oxides (Mn3O4, α-Mn2O3, β-MnO2, CaMnO3, Ca2Mn3O8, CaMn3O6 and CaMn4O8) in the presence of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate, in the water oxidation, convert to layered Mn oxide. This layered Mn oxide is an efficient water oxidizing catalyst.

Mixed-valent MnO(x) (1 < x < 2) was selectively synthesized by chemically etching MnO and Mn2O3 with ceric ammonium nitrate. The obtained MnO(x) exhibited greatly enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as compared to the corresponding pristine oxides.

We present a one-step synthesis process for ultrathin non-crystalline MnO2 nanosheets. Their thickness is about 2 nm and the width varies from 5 to 20 nm. They induce a higher capacitance than zero-dimensional spheres or one-dimensional rods. When heat treated at elevated temperature MnO2 nanosheets partly grow into crystalline Mn2O3 rods.

The preparation of porous Mn2O3 boxes has been developed via a carbonate precursor route. As a Li-ion battery anode, it delivers a high reversible capacity of 1442 mA h g(-1) over 600 cycles at 800 mA g(-1), and 65% of the capacity originates from the gradually emerging interfacial storage contribution.
