Genetic analyses reveal promiscuous mating in female common minke whales, Balaenoptera acutorostrata
Based on 25 microsatellites, first order relatedness was established for three dyads of individuals contained in the Norwegian minke whale DNA-register. One large female a member all dyads. Two competing genealogies were considered and under both these quartet siblings that with high probability must be half-siblings, as opposed to being full siblings.
MOTIVATION Microsatellites, also known as simple sequence repeats, are the tandem repeats of nucleotide motifs of the size 1-6 bp found in every genome known so far. Their importance in genomes is well known. Microsatellites are associated with various disease genes, have been used as molecular markers in linkage analysis and DNA fingerprinting studies, and also seem to play an important role i...
A procedure for selection of wheat genomic fragments containing various microsatellites is described. The procedure is based on the hybridization of single-stranded DNA fragments either to filter bound microsatellite DNA or to biotinylated oligonucleotides in solution. Hybridized strands are isolated, amplified and cloned. Results presented show that enrichment for (CA)n/(TG)n microsatellites d...
Mexico is the fourth largest producer of mango and leading exporter worldwide, cv ‘Ataulfo’ area sown in country. New cultivars are required to maintain production, ensure competitiveness, mitigate problems with pests diseases. The purpose present study was identify microsatellite (SSR) markers zygotic nucellar seedlings originated by embryo seeds, cultured vitro. DNA extracted from...
Dinucleotide microsatellites are dynamic DNA sequences that affect genome stability. Here, we focused on mature microsatellites, defined as pure repeats of lengths above the threshold and unlikely to mutate below it in a single mutational event. We investigated the prevalence and mutational behavior of these sequences by using human genome sequence data, human cells in culture, and purified DNA...
Microsatellites are the most popular and versatile genetic marker with myriads of applications in population genetics, conservation biology, and evolutionary biology. These are the arrays of DNA sequences, consisting of tandemly repeating mono-, di-, tri-, and tetranucleotide units, which are distributed throughout the genomes of most eukaryotic species. Microsatellites are codominant in nature...
Polymerase chain reaction primer pairs for a total of 25 nuclear-encoded microsatellites (loci) were developed from genomic DNA libraries of lane snapper ( Lutjanus synagris ), mutton snapper ( Lutjanus analis ), and yellowtail snapper ( Ocyurus chrysurus ). The microsatellites include 24 perfect (21 dinucleotide and three trinucleotide) and one imperfect (combination tetranucleotide/tetranucle...
The sampling of living insects should be avoided in highly endangered species when the sampling would further increase the risk of population extinction. Nonlethal sampling (wing clips or leg removals) can be an alternative to obtain DNA of individuals for population genetic studies. However, nonlethal sampling may not be possible for all insect species. We examined whether remnants of traffic-...
Despite recent advances in high-throughput sequencing, difficulties are often encountered when developing microsatellites for species with large and complex genomes. This probably reflects the close association in many species of microsatellites with cryptic repetitive elements. We therefore developed a novel approach for isolating polymorphic microsatellites from the club-legged grasshopper (G...
