In an asylum seeker centre in Schleswig-Holstein, a resident was diagnosed with furuncle caused by a Panton-Valentine leukocidine (PVL)-positive community-acquired meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). As a result of active case finding, 232 of 427 persons (54% of all residents) were screened for MRSA and two further PVL-positive CA-MRSA cases were identified
Community-associated methicillin (meticillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) continues to emerge as a cause of serious infections, chiefly of the skin and soft tissues. We present the first documented case of CA-MRSA mediastinitis in an adult. Blood and mediastinal isolates were characterized as CA-MRSA by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and susceptibility testing.
A novel trimethoprim resistance gene, designated dfrK, was detected in close proximity to the tetracycline resistance gene tet(L) on the ca. 40-kb plasmid pKKS2187 in a porcine methicillin (meticillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolate of sequence type 398. The dfrK gene encodes a 163-amino-acid dihydrofolate reductase that differs from all so-far-known dihydrofolate reductases.
Acidovorax avenae is a gram-negative rod in the family Comamonadaceae and a phytopathogen found in the environment. Human infections caused by members of the Comamonadaceae are extremely rare. We report a case of implanted-port-catheter-related sepsis caused by Acidovorax avenae and methicillin (meticillin)-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA).
Sampling animals for carriage of meticillin-resistant, coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS), considered zoonotic pathogens, can be challenging and time-consuming. Developing methods to identify mecA from non-invasive samples, e.g., faeces, would benefit AMR surveillance management MRS carrier animals. This study aimed distinguish carriers non-carriers faecal samples using quantitative poly...
Objective(s): Biofilm formation is one of the most important factors in the development of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, the expression levels of genes responsible for biofilm formation were studied in methicillin sensitive and methicillin resistant S. aureus.Materials and Methods: A total of 100 meticillin-r...
The biofilm-forming capacity of 972 clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus was tested using a high-throughput polystyrene 96-peg plate format. Isolates of S. aureus were collected from patients in hospitals throughout Scotland from 2004 to 2006; 763 of these were meticillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and 209 were meticillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA). The biomass of each biofilm was quantif...
