Methemoglobin is a structurally modified form of hemoglobin incapable binding oxygen, and elevated levels methemoglobin cause tissue hypoxia. Occupational exposure to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, commonly called trinitrotoluene, causes methemoglobinemia. This case report describes 27-year-old male sergeant who developed methemoglobinemia upon trinitrotoluene after blast injury while welding the walls...
A 12-day-old boy presented with duskiness 4 h after circumcision with local anesthesia: infiltration with lidocaine (6 mL 1 %) and topical EMLA cream (2.5 % lidocaine/2.5 % prilocaine). He had no respiratory distress, but a strikingly dark skin. A blood sample showed dark, chocolate brown blood with a raised methemoglobin of 49.8 % (normal <1.5 %) and a lactate of 10 mmol/L. A diagnosis of meth...
Methemoglobinemia is a dyshemoglobinemia characterized by cyanosis and reduced oxygen saturation with increased methemoglobin values. The etiology may be congenital or acquired, the latter being more common. We report case of full-term neonate who presented transient methemoglobinemia caused mutation in gamma chain fetal hemoglobin.
Congenital methemoglobinemia is a rare cause of cyanosis. We report a case of a girl, 17 years old with peripheral cyanosis and normal cardio-pulmonary system. She was diagnosed as a case of methemoglobinemia based on findings of polycythemia and HbM band on hemoglobin electrophoresis. We emphasize the importance of this rare entity in the differential diagnosis of cyanosis.
We report a case of methemoglobinemia with significant hemoglobin desaturation in a young female with AIDS who was being treated for Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia. A review of the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of methemoglobinemia is presented.
INTRODUCTION Methemoglobinemia is a recognized complication of the use of topical anesthetic sprays. The true scope of the problem or the risk with different topical anesthetic sprays and endoscopic procedures is unknown. METHODS We retrospectively identified all cases of methemoglobinemia that occurred in a university affiliated community hospital from 2001 to 2007. RESULTS Eleven cases of...
INTRODUCTION Local anesthesia with prilocaine has become a routine part of ambulatory circumcision procedures. Methemoglobinemia is a rare but potentially lethal complication of local anesthetics. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 40-day-old Turkish boy who presented with cyanosis after receiving local anesthesia with prilocaine. His methemoglobin level revealed severe methemoglobinem...
Rasburicase is frequently used in tumor lysis syndrome (TLS). Although it is very well tolerated, it can cause severe oxidative hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. We report another case of rasburicase-induced methemoglobinemia in a patient with previously unrecognized G6PD deficiency and review the cases of methemoglobine...
We propose a new drug - "Rheoambrasol" which includes substance of plant origin (complex compounds polysaccharide and natural metabolite) non-toxic, environmentally friendly has wide functional capabilities as means capable correcting the consequences methemoglobinemia, restoring structural properties cells preserving their viability. The aim work is to study effect blood substitute on morpholo...
We report a boy with chronic central cyanosis since birth. He was otherwise asymptomatic with chocolate brown color of blood. Methemoglobinemia was suspected after exclusion of the cardiac and pulmonary diseases. Hereditary methemoglobinemia was considered by his clinical course. The simple bedside procedure could be performed to determine methemoglobinemia by vigorous shaking his blood with ox...
