Synthesis gas manufacturing by steam reforming of hydrocarbons is an important industrial process. High endothermic nature of the process makes it one of the most cost and heat intensive processes. In the present work, composite effect of different inert gases on synthesis gas yield, feed gas conversion and temperature distribution along the reactor length has been studied using a heterogeneous...

Starting with a classical process for producing methanol using the reforming and synthesis steps, a combined approach applying simulation models and a new synthesis strategy, named Effect Modelling and Optimisation (EMO), has been used to optimise the energy efficiency of the process. The method allows to identify different ways of improving the energy efficiency of the process. The modificatio...

Hydrogen is getting increasing attention by government and industry leaders, [1], as a very environmentally attractive and clean fuel because its oxidation leads only to water formation. There is abundance of hydrogen in nature, although it is only available for exploitation in a combined state, either in water, hydrocarbons, or coal [2]. Its recovery from these natural resources requires the a...

Pseudomorphism is known as a suitable technique for producing mesoscale pore in silica powders keeping their original morphologies. Herein, silica discs with several millimeter dimensions have been prepared using the same method. This method has been utilized through application of pseudomorphism reaction of preshaped bodies by immersion in a solution containing surfactant and swelling re...

The CO2 reforming of coke oven gases (COG) was carried out over a Ni/γAl2O3 catalyst in order to obtain a suitable syngas for methanol synthesis. The influence of different operating conditions, such as temperature and volumetric hourly space velocity (VHSV), was studied. It was found that the H2 present in the feed gas promotes the Reverse Water Gas Shift reaction (RWGS), which produces water....

This article reviews research related to the activation of methane by Ni and Ru using model catalysts, highlighting the surface science work carried out using molecular beams methods and elevated pressure reaction studies. Emphasis is placed on connecting the model studies of surface science with the corresponding results obtained on the analogous ‘real world’ catalysts. These combined studies ...

Air-blown gasification of biomass in fluidized bed reactors produces relatively low concentrations of hydrogen. The combination of a catalyst and calcium-based sorbent is being developed to increase the efficiency of converting producer gas from biomass gasification into hydrogen. The conversion process entails reforming the methane and tar, and converting carbon monoxide into hydrogen by the w...

The CO2 reforming of coke oven gas for the production of synthesis gas has been studied over an activated carbon, an in-lab prepared Ni/Al2O3 catalyst and physical mixtures of both materials in different proportions (AC+Ni) at 800 oC. It was found that there are two possible coexisting reaction pathways: the direct dry reforming of methane (decomposition of methane followed by gasification of t...

Introduction Steam reforming is a process that converts hydrocarbon fuels into hydrogen and oxygenated carbon species. This process is important for catalytic hydrogen production and for direct electrochemical reforming of hydrocarbons over high temperature fuel cells, such as Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). One of the main problems associated with the process is that conventional reforming (el...

Steam reforming of ethanol in the membrane reactor using the Pd77Ag23 membrane was evaluated in Ni/CeO2 and Co/CeO2 at atmospheric pressure. At 673 K, the H2 yield in the Pd77Ag23 membrane reactor over Co/CeO2 was found to be higher than that over Ni/CeO2, although the H2 yield over Ni/CeO2 exceeded that over Co/CeO2 at 773 K. This difference was owing to their reaction mechanism. At 773 K, the...
