The transformation of the energy supply needs further development of energy storage technologies in order to integrate the fluctuating renewable energy. The conversion of renewable wind power into green methane offers a technical approach with the necessary storage and transport capacities. Thus, the concept of Power-to-Gas which is illustrated here by the coupling of wind energy with a High Te...
A novel, highly active catalyst Ni@MOF-5 showed unexpected activity at low temperature for CO2 methanation. The characterization results indicated that Ni was uniformly and highly dispersed over MOF-5. This catalyst showed high stability and almost no deactivation in long term stability tests up to 100 h.
The mechanism of CO hydrogenation to CH4 at 260 °C on a cobalt catalyst is investigated using steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) and backward and forward chemical transient kinetic analysis (CTKA). The dependence of CH x residence time is determined by 12CO/H2 → 13CO/H2 SSITKA as a function of the CO and H2 partial pressure and shows that the CH4 formation rate is mainly ...
Hydrogen spillover is of great importance to understanding many phenomena in heterogeneous catalysis and has long been controversial. Here we exploit well-defined nanoparticles to demonstrate its occurrence through evaluation of CO2 methanation kinetics. Combining platinum and cobalt nanoparticles causes a substantial increase in reaction rate, but increasing the spatial separation between disc...
The potential of hydrogen as a future energy carrier is only fully unleashed if fuel processors generating hydrogen of a suitable purity can be engineered. Selective methanation of CO can be used as a first step for cleaning up feed gas for e.g. proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells [1] where CO poisons the platinum electrodes and for removing oxygen containing compounds in hydrogen feeds u...
Pretreatment technology is important to the direct methanation of straw. This study used fresh water, four bacterium agents (stem rot agent, "result" microbe decomposition agent, straw pretreatment composite bacterium agent, and complex microorganism agent), biogas slurry, and two chemical reagents (sodium hydroxide and urea) as pretreatment promoters. Different treatments were performed, and t...
The catalytic activation of CO single crystal surfaces is reviewed. Examples are provided which demonstrate the relevance of single crystal studies for modeling the behavior of high surface area supported catalysts. The coupling of an apparatus for the measurement of reaction kinetics at elevated pressures with an ultrahigh vacuum system for surface analysis allows detailed study of structure s...
It has been demonstrated both thermodynamically and experimentally that fuel-cell grade hydrogen can be produced by a one-step sorption enhanced water gas shift (SEWGS) process at about 500 oC, where the water gas shift (WGS) catalyst and the CO2 sorbent are highly integrated. A synthetic CaO-based mixed oxide sorbent was also assessed, which showed a good CO2 capture capacity and stability in ...
Bio-methane potential (BMP) tests are widely used in studies concerning the anaerobic digestion of organic solids. Although they are often criticized to be time consumer, with an average length longer than 30 days, such tests are doubtless easy to be conducted, relatively inexpensive and repeatable. Moreover, BMP tests give significant information about the bio-methanation of specific substrate...
