A new meteorite find, named Khatyrka, was recovered from eastern Siberia as a result of a search for naturally occurring quasicrystals. The meteorite occurs as clastic grains within postglacial clay-rich layers along the banks of a small stream in the Koryak Mountains, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug of far eastern Russia. Some of the grains are clearly chondritic and contain Type IA porphyritic oliv...

The abundant forms in which the major elements in the universe exist have been determined from numerous astronomical observations and meteoritic analyses. Iron (Fe) is an exception, in that only depletion of gaseous Fe has been detected in the interstellar medium, suggesting that Fe is condensed into a solid, possibly the astronomically invisible metal. To determine the primary form of Fe, we r...

Low-iron, manganese-enriched (LIME) olivine grains are found in cometary samples returned by the Stardust mission from comet 81P ⁄Wild 2. Similar grains are found in primitive meteoritic clasts and unequilibrated meteorite matrix. LIME olivine is thermodynamically stable in a vapor of solar composition at high temperature at total pressures of a millibar to a microbar, but enrichment of solar c...

Measurements of the neon isotopic abundances from the ACE-CRIS experiment are presented. These abundances have been obtained in seven energy intervals over the energy range of ~80<E<280 MeV/nucleon. The Ne/Ne source ratio is derived using the measured Ne/Ne abundance as a "tracer" of secondary production of the neon isotopes. We find that the Ne/Ne abundance ratio at the cosmic-ray source is a ...

Isotopic compos•tien and concentration of barium in six stone meteorites and the silicate inclusions of two iron meteorites and three terrestrial samples were measured by use of a 'double spike' isotopic dilution technique in order to correct for laboratory fractionation. Any differences between the abundances of the isotopes in meteoritic and terrestrial Ba were found to be less than 0.1% for ...
