In 2001, human metapneumovirus (hMPV) was discovered in young children with respiratory tract infection of unknown origin. In the two years since its discovery the dinical characteristics of this new virus have been darified. In children, especially those younger than one year of age, hMPV is responsible for 5 to 10% of respiratory tract infections requiring hospitalisation; its clinical course...

Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) and human metapneumovirus (hMPV) are members of the genus Metapneumovirus in the subfamily Pneumovirinae. Metapneumovirus fusion (F) protein mediates the fusion of host cells with the virus membrane for infection. Trypsin- and/or low pH-induced membrane fusion is a strain-dependent phenomenon for hMPV. Here, we demonstrated that three subtypes of aMPV (aMPV/A, aMPV/...

BACKGROUND Although information about the incidence of viral respiratory illnesses and their associated cost can help health officials explore the value of interventions, data are limited from middle-income countries. METHODS During 2008-2010, we conducted a prospective cohort study and followed ~1,800 Argentinian children aged ≤5 years to identify those children who were hospitalized or who ...

results among the 158 children evaluated in this study, 49 individuals (31.1%) had rsv infection while nine individuals (5.7%) had hmpv infection. five (55.5%) of the hmpv-infected children were male while four (44.5%) were female and 27 (55.2%) of the rsv-infected patients were females and 22 (44.8%) were males. the rsv infections were detected in mainly < one year old children and hmpv infect...

background and aims: avian metapneumovirus (ampv) is rna virus responsible for upper respiratory disease in poultry which is usually accompanied by secondary bacterial infections. in iran, some molecular and serological studies indicated that ampv infection occurred in commercial poultry industry. materials and methods: in this study ampv was molecularly identified and characterized in an affec...

BACKGROUND Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) was first recognized in the Netherlands in 2001 from nasopharyngeal aspirate samples and was associated with respiratory tract illness in the pediatric population. This was the first report of metapneumovirus infections in community-acquired pneumonia in Taiwan. METHODS A total of 116 nasopharyngeal aspirate samples from patients with community-acquired...

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a paramyxovirus identified in 2001, is a leading cause of respiratory tract infections in both children and adults. Seroprevalence studies demonstrate that the primary infection occurs before the age of 5 years, and humans are reinfected throughout life. The four subgroups of HMPV occur with year-to-year variability, and infection with one subgroup confers some ser...

We confirmed circulation of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) among children with febrile and respiratory illness in an urban slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh, during active surveillance in 2001. HMPV was the most common single virus identified among febrile children and appears to contribute to the high rates of illness in this population.

BackgroundHuman metapneumovirus is a common virus associated with acute lower respiratory infections (ALRIs) in children. No global burden estimates are available for ALRIs human children, and no licensed vaccines or drugs exist infections. We aimed to estimate the age-stratified metapneumovirus-associated ALRI incidence, hospital admissions, mortality children younger than 5 years.MethodsWe es...
