BACKGROUND Slight changes in the lipid profile can be observed over the acute phase of infectious diseases. Moreover, some anti-infective drugs can modify serum lipid concentrations, although antibiotics do not seem to have a relevant, direct, or acute effect on the lipid profile. METHODS A 75-day-old breastfed Caucasian female, born at term after a regular pregnancy, was hospitalized for ost...

The efficacies of meropenem, a novel carbapenem, and ceftazidime, as empirical therapy of febrile neutropenic patients, were compared in a prospective, randomized clinical trial. One hundred and twelve adult patients were given meropenem 1 g tds iv for 153 episodes of fever, while 109 patients received ceftazidime 2 g tds iv for 151 episodes. All patients survived the first 3 days of therapy an...

UNLABELLED Meropenem is a carbapenem antibacterial agent with a broad spectrum of activity which encompasses gram-negative, gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria. Like other carbapenems, meropenem is stable against chromosomal and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. In patients with moderate to severe intra-abdominal infections, empirical monotherapy with meropenem achieved clinical response rate...

Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic with excellent activity against many pathogens associated with complicated skin and soft tissue infections (cSSTIs). At least three studies have shown meropenem to have good clinical efficacy and to be well tolerated in the treatment of cSSTIs. Two open-label studies compared meropenem 500 mg every 8 hours (total evaluable n=146) with imipenem...

OBJECTIVES Concerns regarding the clinical impact of meropenem instability in continuous infusion (CI) devices may contribute to inconsistent uptake of this method of administration across outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) services. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the clinical efficacy and safety of CIs of meropenem in two Australian tertiary hospitals and assessed its st...

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES With the relentless increase in multidrug- and extensively-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR/XDR-TB), new treatment strategies are necessary. Favorable results have been reported by combining a β-lactam antibiotic and a β-lactamase inhibitor. The β-lactamase encoded by the blaC gene of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is the major mechanism of resistance to β-lactam antibioti...

BACKGROUND Meropenem is a carbapenem that has an excellent activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic, facultative, and anaerobic bacteria. The major objective of the present study was to assess the in vitro activity of meropenem compared to imipenem and piperacillin/tazobactam, against 1071 non-repetitive isolates collected from patients with bacteremia (55%), pneumonia (29%...

We report here paired isogenic Burkholderia pseudomallei genomes obtained from three patients receiving intravenous meropenem for melioidosis treatment, with post-meropenem isolates developing decreased susceptibility. Two genomes were finished, and four were drafted to improved high-quality standard. These genomes will be used to identify meropenem resistance mechanisms in B. pseudomallei.

The outer membrane permeability to meropenem and imipenem in Escherichia coli K-12 was investigated, and its porin-deficient mutants were transformed with a constructed vector carrying the carbapenem-hydrolyzing CphA metallo-beta-lactamase gene. By using the method of Zimmermann and Rosselet, meropenem was shown to penetrate through the outer membrane of E. coli K-12 five times faster than ceph...

This study aimed to describe the pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics of meropenem in children with severe infections and to assess the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) profiles of various meropenem dosage regimens in these patients. Fourteen children with severe infections received intravenous (i.v.) bolus doses of meropenem (20 mg/kg/dose) every 8 h (q8h). Serum samples were obtained b...
