The synthesis and successful activation of IRMOF-8 (Zn(4)O(ndc)(3), ndc = naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate) is presented. Room temperature synthesis effectively suppresses interpenetration. Although conventional activation under reduced pressure leads to structural collapse, activation by flowing supercritical CO(2) yields a guest-free material with a BET surface area of 4461 m(2) g(-1).
The soil at ancient roasting sites in the surroundings of Idrija mine (Slovenia) is highly contaminated with mercury. To assess impact mercury on groundwater by infiltration and find an eco-friendly remediation method, leaching from containing 1347 mg Hg/kg, followed sorption total leached cost-effective natural zeolite (NZ) clinoptilolite, was performed. ultrapure water pHo = 3.00–11.46 after ...
Biosorption is a process in which solids of natural origin are employed for binding heavy metals. It is a promising alternative method to treat industrial effluents, mainly because of its low cost and high metal binding capacity. In this work, the mercury and iron biosorption process by Sargassum sp. seaweed biomass was studied. The work considered the parameters of mercury and iron sorption su...
Effective removal of mcroury conl”amindionborn water is a compl~x and difficult problcm. In patiicular, mercury treatment ornuluml waters is difficult because of the low regulatory w.amkirds. For exmnplc, MCEnvironnwntiil Protection Agency lMS established a natioml wnbitmt waler quality standwd of 12 pans-per-trillion (ppt), whereas the slandwd is 1.8 ppt in the Great LakGSJ Rugion. In addition...
To aid the development of IGCC technologies, the unique properties of aerogels were exploited to research purifying systems for H2S, NO, and Hg that are durable and efficient. Aerogels can be used to capture hot gases based on their high surface areas and great tendency to form composites with various other sorbents or structural supports. Silica aerogels are at the heart of the study. Sol-gel ...
The objective of the project is to examine the potential use of wool as an industrial and/or laboratory adsorbent. This will be carried out by examining the metal sorption and desorption behaviour of a series of wool powders using radiotracer probes. Wool powders will be prepared using various milling techniques, and their metal-binding properties investigated using radiotracers such as Co, Cu ...
The properties of ionic liquids on ordered and non-ordered mesoporous silicas (silica gel, MCM-41, SBA-15) were studied by nitrogen sorption, mercury intrusion and thermogravimetric analyses, as well as (129)Xe-NMR spectroscopy. The ionic liquids investigated are based on the 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium cation, which was combined with anions of low (bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide; [NTf2](-)...
POROUS STONE N.P. Avdelidis, E.T. Delegou, and A. Moropoulou 1 IRT & Materials Consultancy, Volos, Greece; 2 National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece Abstract: In this work, infrared thermography was employed as a monitoring technique during water capillary rise tests on a choice of porous stones in the laboratory, as well as in situ on a cleaned porous stone surface of a histori...
Reduced graphene oxide-supported Fe₃O₄ (Fe₃O₄/rGO) composites were applied in this study to remove low-concentration mercury from aqueous solutions with the aid of an artificial neural network (ANN) modeling and genetic algorithm (GA) optimization. The Fe₃O₄/rGO composites were prepared by the solvothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TE...
