Some meso-tetra aryl porphyrinato manganese (III) acetate or chloride complexes including meso-tetraphenyl porphyrinato manganese (III) chloride (TPPMnCl), meso-tetrakis(2,3-dimethoxyphenyl)porphyrinato manganese(III) acetate, (T(2,3-OMeP)PMnOAc) and meso-tetrakis(pentaflourophenyl)porphyrinato manganese (III) acetate (TPFPPMnOAc) were synthesized. These porphyrins were used as catalyst in the ...

The influence of different metalloporphyrin derivatives on the antimalarial activity of artemisinin was studied with two chloroquine-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum (FcB1-Colombia and FcM29-Cameroon) cultured in human erythrocytes. This potentiation study indicates that the manganese complex of meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin has a significant synergistic effect on the acti...

5-(4-Aminophenyl)-10,15,20-tris(4-sulfonatophenyl) manganese(III) porphyrin conjugated with dextran was synthesized. Its potential of being used as a tumor-targeting magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The results demonstrated that the compound has a longitudinal relaxivity (R(1)) higher than Gd-DTPA, low cytotoxicity and binding specificity to tumor ce...

High-valent manganese(IV or V)-oxo porphyrins are considered as reactive intermediates in the oxidation of organic substrates by manganese porphyrin catalysts. We have generated Mn(V)- and Mn(IV)-oxo porphyrins in basic aqueous solution and investigated their reactivities in C-H bond activation of hydrocarbons. We now report that Mn(V)- and Mn(IV)-oxo porphyrins are capable of activating C-H bo...

In order to elucidate the question of free radical involvement in acute porphyric crisis, antioxidants were administered to two acute intermittent porphyria patients with long-standing recurrent attacks. Clinical condition and urinary excretion of porphyrins and porphyrin precursors were monitored before, during and after an eight week therapy with daily doses of vitamin E, beta-carotene, ascor...

A novel strategy for catalytic oxidation of a variety of benzylic, allylic, propargylic, and aliphatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones by an in situ formed porphyrin-inspired manganese complex in excellent yields (up to 99%) has been successfully developed.

Computer simulations are used to design more hydrated bilayers, formed from amine-modified porphyrin-phospholipids (PoPs). Experiments confirm that the new constructs give rise to bilayers with greater water content. When chelated with manganese, amine-modified PoPs provide improved contrast for magnetic resonance and are safely used for imaging in vivo.

Mathematical modeling studies have suggested that nonspherical, disc-shaped nanoparticles may have optimal intravascular flow and homing characteristics. In this study, we report the development of a fibrin-specific high-relaxivity bialy-shaped polymeric nanoparticle using porphyrin-chelated manganese. We anticipate that this agent would be highly effective for molecular imaging of microthrombi...

Long-term potentiation (LTP) in hippocampal area CA1 is generally dependent on N-methyl--aspartate (NMDA) receptor activation. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), including superoxide, are produced in response to NMDA receptor activation in a number of brain regions, including the hipppocampus. In this study, two cell-permeable manganese porphyrin compounds that mimic superoxide dismutase (SOD) were...

The adsorption and subsequent thermal chemistry of the acetyl-protected manganese porphyrin, [SAc](4)P-Mn(III)Cl on Ag(100) have been studied by high resolution XPS and temperature-programmed desorption. The deprotection event, leading to formation of the covalently bound thioporphyrin, has been characterized and the conditions necessary for removal of the axial chlorine ligand have been determ...
