Tracheobronchial foreign body (TFB) aspiration is rare in adults, although incidence rates increases with advancing age. We report a case of foreign body in left main bronchus in an adult female who had no risk factor. She was successfully treated with removal of betel nuts by bronchoscopy. Unusual presentation and high index of suspicion can help in proper management.
This analysis of thirteen cases of lower airway foreign body aspiration in children reveals a high incidence of aspiration into the left main bronchus, and an increased incidence in older children. Early indentification of nonradio opaque foreign bodies such as food and plastic toys is difficult in the absence of a positive history. Suggestions are offered for prevention, early detection, and t...
Bronchomalacia in adults is rare. A case is reported here of a 65-year-old man with severe cough and mucostasis, caused by a benign bronchomalacia of the ventral wall of the left main bronchus. This was treated successfully with the insertion of a silicone Dumon stent as an alternative to surgical bronchoplasty.
Two patients with an intraluminal carcinoid tumour obstructing the right main bronchus in one, and the left main bronchus in the other, resulting in unilateral increased transradiancy from hypoperfusion of the lung, are described. Resection of the tumours and reconstruction of bronchial continuity was followed by return of perfusion to normal between three and 18 months after the operation. The...
Foreign bodies [FB] in the bronchus are important causes of morbidity and mortality in paediatric age group and pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Inert and smooth foreign bodies are prone for migration from one side to other due to minimal inflammatory process and easy mobility. Herein we are reporting a case of electric bulb aspiration which migrated from right main bronchus to left ...
Here, we report the successful treatment of a 40-year-old man with mucoepidermoid carcinoma that originated in the proximal end of the left main bronchus close to the carina. He underwent wide and deep airway wedge resection, including the distal trachea and part of the carina via left postero-lateral thoracotomy. He has demonstrated neither anatomic complications nor disease recurrence 2 years...
Benign bronchial stenosis is managed by surgical or bronchoscopic methods. Although surgical approach is definitive, it is technically demanding and is costlier than bronchoscopic treatment. Here, we report the case of a 27-year-old female patient with symptomatic benign bronchial stenosis of the left main bronchus. The stenosis was dilated successfully through a fibreoptic bronchoscope by elec...
A 38-year-old tuberculous male Pakistani presented with halitosis and a cough especially marked when lying on his left side. Barium swallow demonstrated a fistula between oesophagus and left main bronchus. Anti-tuberculous therapy and repeated cauterization failed to close the fistula. Thoracotomy confirmed a congenital oesophago-bronchial fistula. Division and suture resulted in cure.
We report on a 65-year-old female who complained of recurrent bronchopulmonary infections since 1999. She suffered from permanent cough and progressive dyspnea. The diagnosis of amyloidosis was made by bronchoscopic tissue biopsies, during which severe bleeding occurred. Argon-plasma-laser treatment stopped the bleeding and resulted in a successful recanalization of the left main bronchus. The ...
