On May 21, 1952, the International Business Machines Corporation announced the IBM Model 726 Tape Unit with the IBM Model 701 Defense Calculator, marking the transition from punched-card storage to digital storage on flexible magnetic tape. That bold introduction was the beginning of what is now a 50-year history of invention that has seen remarkable advances in the storage of information on fl...

Traditionally, digital tape has been used by applications accessing the tape mostly sequentially. Applications having a random access pattern to the data are much better off storing the data on magnetic disks. Today we see new application areas, where the need for huge amounts of digital storage does not make it cost-effective to store all the data on magnetic disk. One example of such an appli...

The anafysis of streamer trade chamber data can be performed using parts of the avaiiabfe bubble chamber anafysis procedures with the exception of the geometrical part. Here major modifications are required in order to fit particle trades to unmeasured vertices and to account for nonuniform magnetic fields. A method and its test, which is suited to handle these particular problems, is described.

An increasing number of database applications require online access to massive amounts of data. Since large-scale storage systems implemented entirely on magnetic disk can be impractical or too costly for many applications, tape jukeboxes can provide an attractive solution. This paper shows how the performance of tape jukeboxes can be improved across a broad parameter space via a new scheduling...

Large data installations normally archive relatively inactive data to a near-line tape library. The tape library performs reasonably well for sequential-access retrieval workloads. However, if the retrieval access slices across multiple data sets, or makes retrievals from scattered portions of a large data set, then the performance can suffer

Operating points to achieve Terabyte tape cartridge capacities and beyond drive both linear and track densities to values not perceived possible a few short years ago. The primary contributors to the issues related to these high capacities are the physical and magnetic properties of the tape media itself. The total magnetic moment of the recorded bit, driven by the magnetic coating thickness, d...

There are available today many data storage devices that serve the diverse application requirements of the consumer, professional entertainment, and computer data processing industries. Storage technologies include semiconductors, several varieties of optical disk, optical tape, magnetic disk, and many varieties of magnetic tape. In some cases, devices are developed with specific characteristic...
