We have demonstrated a storage ring for ultracold neutral atoms. Atoms with mean velocities of 1 m/s corresponding to kinetic energies of approximately 100 neV are confined to a 2 cm diameter ring by magnetic forces produced by two current-carrying wires. Up to 10(6) atoms are loaded at a time in the ring, and seven revolutions are clearly observed. Additionally, we have demonstrated multiple l...
The experimentally measured mechanical efficiency of the F(1)-ATPase under viscous loading is nearly 100%, far higher than any other hydrolysis-driven molecular motor (Yasuda et al., 1998). Here we give a molecular explanation for this remarkable property.
A linear AC trap for polar molecules in high-field seeking states has been devised and implemented, and its characteristics have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The trap is loaded with slow 15ND3 molecules in their ground state (para-ammonia) from a Stark decelerator. The trap's geometry offers optimal access as well as improved loading. We present measurements of the d...
A GRMHD model of disk outflows with neutrino-driven mass ejection is presented. The model is used to calculate the structure of the outflow in the sub-slow magnetosonic region and the mass loading of the outflow, under conditions anticipated in the central engines of gamma-ray bursts. It is concluded that magnetic launching of ultra-relativistic polar outflows is in principle possible along low...
The flexibility of the microfabricated format creates unique opportunities for study of the electrophoretic process. The present work utilizes digital images to capture the motion of DNA samples during pre-electrophoretic processes. A systematic study of DNA loading and strong sample stacking (sample concentration effects) was performed in order to analyze realistic DNA analysis conditions with...
Bi-factor analysis is a form of confirmatory factor analysis originally introduced by Holzinger and Swineford (Psychometrika 47:41-54, 1937). The bi-factor model has a general factor, a number of group factors, and an explicit bi-factor structure. Jennrich and Bentler (Psychometrika 76:537-549, 2011) introduced an exploratory form of bi-factor analysis that does not require one to provide an ex...
We demonstrate the production of high-density cold 87Rb samples (2 x 10(14) atoms/cm3) in a simple optical lattice formed with YAG light that is diffracted from a holographic phase plate. A loading protocol is described that results in 10,000 atoms per 10 microm x 10 microm x 100 microm unit cell of the lattice site. Rapid free evaporation leads to a temperature of 50 microK and phase space den...
This paper uses experimental investigation and theoretical derivation to study the unified failure mechanism and ultimate capacity model of reinforced concrete (RC) members under combined axial, bending, shear and torsion loading. Fifteen RC members are tested under different combinations of compressive axial force, bending, shear and torsion using experimental equipment designed by the authors...
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the shape of fragments generated by explosive and impact loading of closed shells. Based on high speed imaging, we have determined the fragmentation mechanism of shells. Experiments have shown that the fragments vary from completely isotropic to highly anisotropic elongated shapes, depending on the microscopic cracking mechanism of the shell. ...
A scheme for addressing individual atoms in one- or two-dimensional optical lattices loaded with one atom per site is proposed. The scheme is based on position-dependent atomic population transfer induced by several standing-wave driving fields. This allows various operations important in quantum-information processing, such as manipulation and measurement of any single-atom, two-qubit operatio...
