Marked pancreatic islet cell hyperplasia was found in a patient with laxative-induced diarrhoea. It is suggested that laxative abuse might be an important aetiological factor in patients with pancreatic islet cell hyperplasia and the watery diarrhoea syndrome but in whom no hormonal excess can be demonstrated.
AIMS To explore the relative value patients place on comfort and convenience versus test sensitivity and specificity in the context of computed tomographic colonography (CTC) screening. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty semi-structured interviews were carried out with patients attending hospital for radiological tests unrelated to CTC. Preferences for CTC with different types of bowel preparation ...
Methods: Aqueous extract (AqRS) and fresh juice (FreRS) of Raphanus sativus L. were prepared and evaluated by preliminary phytochemical test. Laxative action of the extract at a dose of 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg (p.o) was evaluated using wistar albino rats, weighing 200-300 g, in different experimental model such as loperamide induced constipation, laxative activity test, gastrointestinal motility...
BACKGROUND The characteristics of patients who suffer from noncancer pain and opioid-induced constipation are not well understood. METHODS Cross-sectional patient survey and chart review data from the baseline assessment of an ongoing longitudinal study in the USA, Canada, Germany, and the UK were evaluated via descriptive statistics. Participants had confirmation of daily opioid therapy ≥30 ...
Ammonium acid urate urolithiasis is a quite rare condition. Our literature review of ammonium acid urate urolithiasis suggests that ammonium acid urate urolithiasis should be regarded as a general medical complication related to anorexia nervosa, and purging by laxative abuse might be a crucially important risk.
BACKGROUND The root and stem bark of Cassia sieberiana DC. (Caesalpiniaceae) and the root of Senna obtusifolia (Linn) Irwin and Barneby (Caesalpiniaceae), used for constipation in Nigeria, were assayed for laxative properties in male albino rats using the official senna leaf (Senna alexandrina Mill. family Caesalpiniaceae) as the reference standard. This is with a view to finding alternative la...
Certain phenolic compounds are known to exhibit laxative properties. Seed sprouts, such as those of peanut, are known to promote de novo biosynthesis of phenolic compounds. This study was conducted to examine the potential laxative properties of 80% (v/v) ethanolic extract of peanut sprout (PSE), which contains a high concentration of phenolic compounds such as resveratrol. For this, SD rats we...
