Acute lung injury is characterized by excessive extracellular matrix proteolysis and neutrophilic inflammation. A major risk factor for lung injury is bacterial pneumonia. However, host factors that protect against pathogen-induced and host-sustained proteolytic injury following infection are poorly understood. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is a major cause of nosocomial pneumonia and secretes pr...

In members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, ampC, which encodes a beta-lactamase, is regulated by an upstream, divergently transcribed gene, ampR. However, in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the regulation of ampC is not understood. In this study, we compared the characteristics of a P. aeruginosa ampR mutant, PAOampR, with that of an isogenic ampR+ parent. The ampR mutation greatly altered AmpC produ...

By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation measurements, we performed a comprehensive investigation on the electronic structure of LaSb, which exhibits near-quadratic extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) without any sign of saturation at magnetic fields as high as 40 T. We clearly resolve one spherical and one intersecting-ellipsoidal hole Fermi surfaces (...

The genus Cellulophaga is composed of obligate aerobic Gram-negative bacteria commonly found in association with marine algae. We report the approximately 4.42-Mbp draft genome sequence of Cellulophaga sp. E6, which inhibits N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone (3-oxo-C12-HSL)-mediated quorum sensing (QS), lasB transcription, and biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa uses intercellular signals to control the density-dependent expression of many virulence factors. The las and rhl quorum-sensing systems function, respectively, through the autoinducers N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone and N-butyryl-L-homoserine lactone (C(4)-HSL), which are known to positively regulate the transcription of the elastase-...

In the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, quorum sensing (QS) via acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) signals coordinates virulence gene expression. AHL signals must reach a critical threshold before enough is bound by cognate regulators LasR and RhlR to drive transcription of target genes. In addition, three anti-activator proteins, QteE, QscR, and QslA, sequester QS regulators to increa...

Two quorum-sensing systems (las and rhl) regulate virulence gene expression in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The las system consists of a transcriptional activator, LasR, and LasI, which directs the synthesis of the autoinducer N-(3-oxododecanoyl) homoserine lactone (PAI-1). Induction of lasB (encoding elastase) and other virulence genes requires LasR and PAI-1. The rhl system consists of a putative ...

which is frequently isolated from clinical specimens obtained from burns, surface wounds, the urinary tract, ear and eye infections, and the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis. P. aeruginosa secretes many extracellular proteins, and of these, several proteases including alkaline protease (AprA) and elastase (LasB) are known to play important roles in the pathogenesis of human infections cau...
