In the present study, the ERP (event-related brain potentials) technique was used to investigate how accentuation influences the semantic short-term memory representations during on-line speech processing, and how this accentuation effect interacts with the distance of accentuation in the speech signal. Chinese spoken sentences were used as stimuli. The sentences included two critical words: No...

The paper is dedicated to the phenomenon of accentuation on multiple narrative levels. Accentuation is a textual device that indicates the elements of narrative that have to be memorized by readers. It is different from the well known notion of foregrounding, as accentuation does not violate the norm, but, on the contrary, is in itself conventional. While foregrounding draws readers’ attention ...

In this paper, we apply the symplectic integration method using jolt factorization described in an earlier paper to the symplectic map describing the nonlinear pendulum Hamiltonian. We compare results obtained with this method with those obtained using nonsymplectic methods and demonstrate that our results are much better.

The prediction and prevention of traumatic brain injury, spinal injury and musculo-skeletal injury is a very important aspect of preventive medical science. Recently, in a series of papers [1, 2, 3], I have proposed a new coupled loading-rate hypothesis as a unique cause of all above injuries. This new hypothesis states that the main cause of all mechanical injuries is a Euclidean Jolt, which i...

In many languages affixes can assign accents on roots to which they attach. Some previous studies have claimed that accents assigned by affixes universally fall on syllables next to the affixes (Kurisu 2001; Revithiadou 2008). Kawahara and Wolf (2010) document a newly-coined suffix which counterexemplifies this generalization: the new Japanese suffix [-zu] assigns an accent on root-initial syll...

Background. Efficient early diastolic filling is essential for normal cardiac function. Diastolic suction, as evidenced by a decreasing left ventricular pressure during early filling, could result from restoring forces (the release of potential energy stored during systolic deformation) dependent on myofilament relaxation. Although these restoring forces have been envisioned within individual m...
