In this issue of JEM, Fu et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20161120) identified the kinase Mink1 as a novel negative regulator of Th17 cell generation. Mink1, activated by reactive oxygen species (ROS), prevents TGF-β activation of Smad2, therefore limiting Th17 cell differentiation.

In this issue of JEM, Marciniak et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20161731) identify a putative novel function of tau protein as a regulator of insulin signaling in the brain. They find that tau deletion impairs hippocampal response to insulin through IRS-1 and PTEN dysregulation and suggest that, in Alzheimer's disease, impairment of brain insulin signaling might occur via tau loss of function.

In this issue of JEM, Swanson et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20171749) report an unanticipated role for cGAMP in priming and activation of inflammasomes in addition to its well-characterized function as an endogenous second messenger inducing type I interferons in the cytosolic DNA-sensing pathway.

In this issue of JEM, Chheda et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20171046) report that a conserved hotspot mutation associated with an aggressive form of brain cancer generates an immunogenic T cell epitope restricted by a common HLA subtype, thereby creating a "public" neoantigen.

Other talents— the smart kid’s tennis prowess or the athlete’s straight As in chemistry—are often overlooked. Likewise, The Journal of Experimental Medicine is considered by...

Daniel et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20110574) have previously published in JEM a study on the preventive effect of tolerogenic vaccination with a strong agonist insulin mimetope in type 1 diabetes. Our study now challenges these results and shows that osmotic pump delivery of the modified insulin peptide R22E did not prevent hyperglycemia, accelerated disease onset, increased its inciden...

A hallmark of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the functional impairment and depletion of antiviral T cells. In this issue of JEM, Pallett et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20162115) identify a reservoir of functional HBV-specific T cells among liver-resident T cells.

In this issue of JEM, Kaittanis et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20171052) report a new signaling role for prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), providing a mechanistic link between two major oncogenic pathways, as well as promising therapeutic implications for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVES The aim was to construct and validate a gender-specific job exposure matrix (JEM) for physical exposures to be used in epidemiological studies of low back pain (LBP). MATERIALS AND METHODS We utilized two large Finnish population surveys, one to construct the JEM and another to test matrix validity. The exposure axis of the matrix included exposures relevant to LBP (heavy physical ...

1131 What does The Journal of Experimental Medicine look for in a paper? As the new Executive Editor of the Journal , I expect to be asked this question repeatedly. The Journal is known for its strengths in specific arenas, including immunology and inflammation, microbial pathogenesis, oncology, stem cell biology, hematopoiesis, as well as connective tissue and vascular biology. However, we wel...
