Cell surface carbohydrates play important roles in cell recognition mechanisms. Recently, we provided evidence that particle selection by suspension-feeding bivalves can be mediated by interactions between carbohydrates associated with the particle surface and lectins present in mucus covering bivalve feeding organs. In this study, we used lectins tagged with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) t...

BACKGROUND Atypical femoral fracture (AFF) has been high-lightened, because it was associated with the long-term use of bisphosphonate. Comparing western countries, the incidence rate of AFF was unclear in East Asian patients. Our purposes were to estimate the incidence rate of radiologically defined AFF in Korea, and to determine the association between occurrence of AFF and long-term use of b...

Much attention has been paid to the relationship between atypical femoral fractures (AFF) and use of bisphosphonates (BPs). While a significant cause-effect relationship was not established in earlier studies, more recent data shows a growing relationship between AFF and BPs use. The definition of an 'AFF' has also undergone significant changes. This review briefly summarizes the definition, pa...

In the intervening years since publication of the chapter “Aff ect and Consumer Behavior” (Cohen & Areni, 1991) in the Handbook of Consumer Behavior (Kassarjian & Robertson, 1991), research in consumer behavior dealing with aff ect has exploded, making it one of the fi eld’s central research topics. Within psychology more generally, Schimmack and Crites (2005) located 923 references to aff ect ...

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence of new atrial fibrillation or flutter (AFF) in the EMPHASIS-HF (Eplerenone in Mild Patients Hospitalization And SurvIval Study in Heart Failure) database. BACKGROUND Aldosterone antagonism in heart failure might influence atrial fibrosis and remodeling and, therefore, risk of developing AFF. The development of new AFF was a pre...

Forty cultivable, visually distinct bacterial cultures were isolated from four Baltic microalgal cultures Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Scenedesmus obliquus, Isochrysis sp., and Nitzschia microcephala, which have been maintained for several years in the laboratory. Bacterial isolates were characterized with respect to morphology, antibiotic susceptibility, and 16S ribosomal DNA sequence. A total of 17...

Renal afferent arterioles (AFF) regulate glomerular capillary pressure through two main mechanisms: the myogenic response (MYO) and tubuloglomerular feedback (TGF). Because Rho-kinase and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) are established factors that modulate vascular tone, we examined the role of these factors in pressure-induced AFF tone in Wistar-Kyoto rats and in spontaneously hypertensive rats (...

We consider the aff(1)-module structure on the spaces of bilinear differential operators acting on the spaces of weighted densities. We compute the first differential cohomology of the Lie superalgebra aff(1) with coefficients in space Dλ,ν;µ of bilinear differential operators acting on weighted densities. We study also the super analogue of this problem getting the same results.

Atypical femoral fractures (AFF), although rare, are recognized more often during the last decade. They are located in the subtrochanteric region or the femoral shaft, may be bilateral, can evolve to complete fractures after bone overload or minimal trauma and have specific radiological features. The complete fractures have horizontal or slightly oblique configuration accompanied by a medial sp...

BACKGROUND Prevalence of subclinical involvement of motor pathways in clinically diagnosed Brachial Monomelic Amyotrophy (BMMA) is unknown. AIMS To determine the prevalence of subclinical involvement of central motor pathways in BMMA using transcranial magnetic stimulation. SETTING AND DESIGN Prospective case-control study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Central motor conduction time (CMCT) was de...
