Six patients with Acinetobacter genomic species 10 bacteremia were identified. The clinical features of the patients, phenotypic and genotypic identifications, antimicrobial susceptibilities, and genes flanking ISAba1 of the bacteria were described. The results revealed that this bacterium is a potentially lethal pathogen that can cause health care-associated infections in debilitated patients.

Carbapenem-resistant isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii from intensive care units at Split University Hospital, Split, Croatia, were studied. Most (100 of 106) had ISAba1 inserted upstream of a bla(OXA-107) gene, encoding an unusual OXA-51-type oxacillinase. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed that the isolates formed three clusters belonging to the sequence group 2 (European clone 1) li...

The genetic structures surrounding the plasmid-carried blaOXA-23 oxacillinase gene, encoding resistance to carbapenems, were studied in Acinetobacter baumannii. ISAba1 and the novel element ISAba4 were detected upstream of the blaOXA-23 gene, providing promoter sequences for its expression. These insertion elements were likely involved in transposition processes at the origin of acquisition of ...

Methods: The studied population included 59 MDRAB strains previously genotyped by PFGE and multilocus sequence typing. The search for the ADC (blaADC), CHO (blaOXA-51-like, blaOXA-23-like, blaOXA-40-like and blaOXA-58-like) and MBL (blaIMP, blaVIM, blaSIM-1, blaGIM-1, blaSPM-1 and blaNDM-1) genes, and for the ISs (ISAba1, ISAba2, ISAba3, ISAba4 and IS18) was done by PCR assays. The phenotypic p...

In recent years, different resistance genes have been found in Acinetobacter spp., especially in the species A. baumannii. We describe two isolates of carbapenem-resistant A. nosocomialis harboring ISAba1-blaOXA-23 and blaOXA-51 found in patients from the city of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of carbapenem-resistant A. nosocomiali...

BACKGROUND The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) was observed in a Kenyan hospital from 2009 to 2010. Further investigation of the dissemination of CRAB isolates and the molecular characterization of associated resistance determinants were therefore performed. METHODS Antibiotic susceptibilities were determined by broth microdilution and Etest. Metallo-β-lactama...

The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of a β-lactamase gene in a group of multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. Twenty strains of multi-drug resistant A. baumannii were isolated. Thirty-four β-lactamase genes and the ISaba1-OXA-23 linkage were analyzed in these strains by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and verified by DNA sequencing. Three kinds of β-lactamase genes (T...

A 30 month prospective study of Acinetobacter species encountered in the Central Pathology Laboratory of St James's Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, was conducted to investigate the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of carbapenem resistance in such isolates. Acinetobacter genomic species 3 (AG3) was found to be the predominant Acinetobacter species (45/114, 39 %) in our institution. A total of 11...

BACKGROUND In order to study the enzymatic carbapenem resistance mechanisms in Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from Argentina, we performed molecular characterization on 41 epidemiologically unrelated strains isolated from 1995 to 2006 with diminished susceptibilities to imipenem and meropenem. METHODOLOGY Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were identified with the ARDRA technique. The total g...

In addition to intrinsic resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii, many different types of acquired resistance mechanisms have been reported, including the presence of VIM and IMP metallo β-lactamases and also of blaOXA-23-like and blaOXA-58-like enzymes. In the Kurdistan region of Iraq, the multiresistant A. baumannii-calcoaceticus complex is prevalent. We characterized the different mechanisms o...
