We present a technique for split peroneous brevis lateral ankle stabilization using an interference screw as the fixation device. The interference screw provided stable fixation by way of physiologic tension and restored lateral ankle instability while preserving the range of motion in the surrounding joints.

Bone tunnel enlargement following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction can complicate revision surgery. This study compared postoperative tibial tunnel widening in patients who underwent arthroscopically assisted, single-incision, four-strand hamstring ACL reconstruction using a poly-L-lactic acid/hydroxyapatite blend (PLLA+HA) bioabsorbable interference screw for tibial fixation, wi...

Knee ligament reconstructions are commonly performed orthopedic procedures. Graft fixation is generally performed with metallic or absorbable interference screws. In a recent study, only ten reports of screw migration were retrieved; of these, only one was not related to the anterior cruciate ligament, and the majority was related to the use of poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) screws. Only one case re...

The goals of this study were to evaluate torsional strength and modes of failure in commercially available bioabsorbable interference screws and to test the effect of screw diameter on torsional strength when screws become jammed during insertion. We tested the Arthrex, BioScrew, Endo-Fix, Phantom, and Sysorb screws, all 20 mm in length. Four major modes of failure were encountered. Analysis of...

Tendon transfer techniques in the foot and ankle are used for tendon ruptures, deformities, and instabilities. This fresh cadaver study compares the tendon fixation strength in 10 paired specimens by performing a tendon to tendon fixation technique or using 7 x 20-25 mm bioabsorbable interference-fit screw tendon fixation technique. Load at failure of the tendon to tendon fixation method averag...

Arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) is recommended as state-of-the-art treatment for patients with pure compression fracture of the tibial plateau. We describe a new technique for ARIF of pure compression tibial plateau fractures that uses a cannulated, bioabsorbable interference screw. After a guide pin is placed in the center of the compressed fragment and a tamp is used to el...

Interference screws are frequently used for fixation of anterior cruciate ligament grafts. When revision surgery is necessary, it is important for the surgeon to recognize variations in interference screw morphology to reduce the potential difficulties in screw removal. The purpose of this observational study is to review the variety of metallic and nonmetallic absorbable interference screws co...

INTRODUCTION The use of bioabsorbable interference screws has become popular for treatment of avulsion fractures of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Complications are uncommon. We report a case of severe chondral damage caused by the early breakage of an absorbable screw head after fixation of an avulsion fracture of the tibial attachment of the PCL. The patient felt a sudden locking of t...

Interference screws are commonly used for graft fixation in bonetendon-bone patellar tendon anterior cmciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The clinical significance of graft screw divergence has not been well studied. This report retrospectively reviews our initial experience in 73 consecutive endoscopic (single-incision) ACL reconstructions using interference screw fixation. Femoral divergenc...

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of screw length and diameter on the mechanical properties of biceps tenodesis (BT) with an interference screw in 2 different locations (proximal and distal). METHODS We randomized 42 fresh-frozen human cadaveric shoulders (mean age, 65 ± 8 years) into 6 groups (n = 7): arthroscopic proximal BT using 7 × 15-, 7 × 25-, 8 × 15-, or 8 × 25-mm interference screws or ...
