BACKGROUND Postoperative ileus, a transient impairment of gastrointestinal motility, is a common cause of delay in return to normal bowel function after abdominal surgery. Colectomy surgery patients who develop postoperative ileus could have greater health care resource utilization, including prolonged hospitalization, compared with those who do not develop postoperative ileus. Very few studies...
Postoperative ileus, a temporary cessation in bowel motility, is a common and significant complication of major surgery. Consequences of postoperative ileus include increased patient discomfort, delayed time to adequate nutrition, prolonged length of stay, and increased cost to the patient and healthcare system. The traditional, multi-modal approach to the resolution of postoperative ileus incl...
OBJECTIVE To review the pathogenesis and treatment of postoperative ileus. DATA SOURCES Data collected for this review were identified from a MEDLINE database search of the English-language literature. The exact indexing terms were "postoperative ileus," "treatment," "etiology," and "pathophysiology." Previous review articles and pertinent references from those articles were also used. STUD...
INTRODUCTION Our aim was to examine the incidence and risk factors of postoperative ileus among patients who underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 239 patients who underwent RARP transperitoneally between February 2009 and December 2011. Patients switched to open surgery were excluded. We defined postoperative ileus as intolera...
OBJECTIVE Abdominal surgery invariably causes a temporary reduction of normal intestinal motility, called postoperative ileus. Postoperative ileus extends hospital stays, increases the costs of hospitalization, and may contribute to the formation of postoperative adhesions. We designed experiments to determine if visceral massage affects postoperative ileus in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHOD...
Mechanical small bowel obstructions caused by gallstones account for 1% to 3% of cases. In these patients, 80% to 90% of residual gallstones in these patients will pass through a remaining fistula without consequence. Recurrent gallstone ileus has been reported in 5% of patients. We report the case of a woman, aged 72 years, who presented with mechanical small bowel obstruction caused by gallst...
Gallstone ileus is an uncommon complication of cholelithiasis, with a high morbidity and mortality rate, usually related to the delayed diagnosis of intestinal obstruction. Diagnosing gallstone ileus needs a high index of suspicion. A case of a gallstone ileus is reported. The clinical presentation, radiological features, intra-operative findings, operative procedure and literature review are p...
We present a case report of a 62-year-old man with adhesive ileus caused by paracolostomy hernia. The patient underwent enterosynechotomy for ileus and colopexy for paracolostomy hernia laparoscopically. This procedure has benefits of prevention of recurrent adhesive ileus and early postoperative recovery of the intestinal tract.
BACKGROUND In term newborns meconium ileus is frequently associated with cystic fibrosis. Reports on meconium ileus in preterm infants being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis early after birth are very scarce. Associations between genotype and phenotype in cystic fibrosis and its particular comorbidities have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION Two extremely preterm twin infants (26 weeks of gestat...
