Ecosystem-level effects of stressors are critical to understanding community regulation, and environmental stress models are useful in describing such effects. Hypoxia is an important stressor in aquatic ecosystems that usually decreases abundance and biomass of benthic fauna. In field surveys, predator abundance is low in hypoxic areas, and in lab experiments, predators reduce their feeding ra...

AIM Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with atherosclerotic cardio-vascular disease. We reported recently daytime hypoadiponectinemia and nocturnal falls in circulating adiponectin concentrations (Δadiponectin) in OSAS patients, in part due to hypoxic stress. The present study investigated the association between Δadiponectin and fat distribution in OSAS males, and t...

Long-term heat acclimation appears to improve tolerance to hypoxic insults in various tissues, including brain, providing a promising avenue to improve functional outcomes following cerebrovascular events. Glutamate discharge is implicated in dysfunction following hypoxic stress and thus, targeting glutamate receptors with heat acclimation could improve cognitive outcomes following hypoxic injury.

Intermittent hypoxia due to sleep apnea syndrome is associated with cardiovascular diseases. However, the precise mechanisms by which intermittent hypoxic stress accelerates cardiovascular diseases are largely unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of gp91(phox)-containing NADPH oxidase in the development of left ventricular (LV) remodeling induced by intermittent hypoxic st...

A variety of human disorders, e.g., ischemic heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eventually share the deleterious consequences of a common, hypoxic and oxidative stress pathway. In this review, we utilize recent information on the cellular defense mechanisms against hypoxia and oxidative stress with the hope to propose new therapeutic tools. The hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a key player...

We have previously shown that atherosclerotic apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE(-/-)) x LDL receptor-deficient (LDLR(-/-)) mice develop myocardial infarction when exposed to hypoxic stress. This study was performed to assess the role of thrombin and thrombosis in this process. ApoE(-/-) x LDLR(-/-) mice were fed a cholesterol-rich diet for 8 mo and were then subjected to hypoxic stress while rec...

ROOSEVELT, T. STEVEN, ANN RUHMANN-WENNHOLD, AND DON H. NELSON. A protective e$ect of glucocorticoids in hypoxic stress. Am. J. Physiol. 223(l) : 30-33. 1972.-Studies were carried out in female rats on the effects of glucocorticoids on survival time and lactic acid formation in hypoxic stress. Endogenous corticoids increased survival time of rats exposed to a hypoxic (5% 0,) atmosphere, since sh...

The effect of gabapentin has been investigated on acute hypoxic stress-induced behavioral alterations and oxidative damage in mice. Mice were subjected to hypoxia for 2 hr. Treatment with gabapentin (50 and 100 mg/kg) significantly increased ambulatory movements, exerted anti-anxiety like effect and reduced oxidative damage in mice subjected to acute hypoxic stress. Treatment with picrotoxin (1...

Liver cells experience hypoxic stress when drug-metabolizing enzymes excessively consume O2 for hydroxylation. Hypoxic stress changes the transcription of several genes by activating a heterodimeric transcription factor called hypoxia-inducible factor- 1α/β (HIF-1α/β). We found that hypoxic stress (0.1% O2) decreased the expression of cytochrome P450 7A1 (CYP7A1), a rate-limiting enzyme involve...

Hypoxia is a hallmark of solid tumors, which may offer opportunities for targeted therapies of cancer; however, the mechanisms that link hypoxia to malignant transformation and tumor progression are not fully understood. Here, we show that up-regulation of the polyamine system promotes cancer cell survival during hypoxic stress. Hypoxia was found to induce polyamine transport and the key enzyme...
