Polyribosomes, characterized by sedimentation behavior and electron microscopy, have been prepared from hypophyseal isografts in kidney. These preparations have incorporation ability for amino acids in vitro and can be stimulated for phenylalanine incorporation by polyuridylic acid, similar to the rat liver system. The 100,000 X g supernatant fraction contains a factor which protects the integr...

Until 2000 it was believed that gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) was the sole regulator of hypophyseal gonadotropes. In 2000, the discovery of a gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH) initiated a revolution in the field of reproductive physiology. Identification of GnIH homologues in mammals, the arginine-phenylalanine-amide (RFamide)-related peptides (RFRPs), indicated a similar function....

The evolution of sex steroids in the plasma and gonads of the lizard Podarcis s. sicula during the postreproductive period shows that these hormones could be involved in determining refractoriness. In the male, during this phase, the oestradiol could lower the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system through a negative feed-back. In the female a similar role could be assigned to progesterone.

Fevold et al. (1) and Wallen-Lawrence (2) have reported the separation of a follicle-stimulating principle and a luteinizing principle from hypophyseal gonadotropic preparations. The latter author includes evidence for a chemical separation involving destruction of the luteinizing principle by formalin. Maxwell (3) on the other hand was able to obtain a pure follicular ovarian response simply b...

Changes in chicken embryo thymus after partial decerebration (including the hypophysis) and hypophyseal allograft were investigated. Chicken embryos were partially decerebrated at 36-40 hr of incubation and on day 12 received a hypophyseal allograft from 18-day-old donor embryos. The embryonic thymuses were collected on day 18 and examined with histological methods, tested for the anti-thymosti...

Effects of ethanol and acetaldehyde on the release of arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OXT) were examined using a superfusion system of the isolated hypothalamo-hypophyseal complex of rats. The release of both hormones was significantly suppressed by exposing the tissue samples to Eagle MEM medium containing 1.75 and 2.5% ethanol (the maximal suppression: AVP, 30% and 70%; OXT, 30% and ...
