Quinine is a promising natural product building block for polymer-based nucleic acid delivery vehicles as its structure enables DNA binding through both intercalation and electrostatic interactions. However, studies exploring the potential of quinine-based polymers applications (transfection) are limited. In this work, we used hydroquinine-functionalized monomer, HQ, with 2-hydroxyethyl acrylat...

NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) is a two-electron reductase that detoxifies quinones derived from the oxidation of phenolic metabolites of benzene. A polymorphism in NQO1, a C609T substitution, has been identified, and individuals homozygous for this change (T/T) have no detectable NQO1. Exposed workers with a T/T genotype have an increased risk of benzene hematotoxicity. This finding s...

Previous studies have demonstrated the role of hydroquinone (HQ), a hydroxylated benzene metabolite, in modulating various immune responses; however, its role in macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses is not fully understood. In this study, the role of HQ in inflammatory responses and the underlying molecular mechanism were explored in macrophages. HQ down-regulated the expression of interf...

The reactivity of bisphenol A (BPA), diethylstilbestrol (DEST) 2,2'-biphenol (22'BP), 4,4'-biphenol (44'BP) and hydroquinone (HQ) as radical scavengers was examined in 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)- and benzoyl peroxide (BPO)-induced methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization with respect to kinetic considerations. The initial rate of polymerization (IRP) was found to decrease in the order: ...

We prove an analog of Janson’s strong hypercontractivity inequality in a class of non-commutative “holomorphic” algebras. Our setting is the q-Gaussian algebras Γq associated to the q-Fock spaces of Bozejko, Kümmerer and Speicher, for q ∈ [−1, 1]. We construct subalgebras Hq ⊂ Γq , a q-Segal-Bargmann transform, and prove Janson’s strong hypercontractivity L(Hq)→ L(Hq) for r an even integer.

Objectives Based on the concept of health quotient (HQ), we designed and facilitated personalized plans to improve patients' compliance and oral health. The study aims to increase HQ level of patients with chronic periodontitis from four aspects, namely self-care, health knowledge, lifestyle, and mental health, and evaluate the effects of HQ training in maintaining oral health. Method In tota...

The photo-sensitive self-motion of a benzoquinone (BQ) disk was investigated on a hydroquinone (HQ) aqueous solution. The mode-switching of self-motion, i.e., continuous → intermittent → no motion, was observed with an increase in the concentration of HQ. Upon irradiation with UV light (∼254 nm), the critical concentrations of HQ that were associated with the three modes of motion shifted to lo...

Hydroquinone (HQ), a major reactive metabolite of benzene, contributes to benzene‑induced leukemia. The molecular mechanisms that underlie this activity remain to be elucidated. Poly ADP‑ribosylation (PARylation) is a type of reversible posttranslational modification that is performed by enzymes in the PAR polymerase (PARP) family and mediates different biological processes, including apoptosis...

To investigate whether hydroxylated metabolites of benzene may be responsible for the amplification of granulocyte-macrophage progenitor cells (GM-CFC) observed in mice that inhale benzene, groups of six C57BL6 mice were injected with hydroquinone (HQ) (75 mg/kg) or HQ (50 mg/kg) plus phenol (PHE) (50 mg/kg) twice daily for 11 days. Deviations in blood leukocyte and erythrocyte levels by up to ...

Benzene is an occupational toxicant and an environmental pollutant that potentially causes hematotoxicity and leukemia in exposed populations. Epidemiological studies suggest an association between an increased incidence of childhood leukemia and benzene exposure during the early stages of pregnancy. However, experimental evidence supporting the association is lacking at the present time. It is...
