Under conditions of iron starvation, Bacteroides fragilis expresses various iron-repressible outer membrane proteins (IROMPs). A 44-kDa protein appears to be one of the major outer membrane proteins (OMPs) in B. fragilis under iron stress and plays a role in heme uptake by this bacterium. To determine whether the 44-kDa IROMP of B. fragilis is expressed in vivo and whether this protein is immun...

Bacteroides fragilis causes the majority of Gram-negative anaerobic infections in the humans. The presence of a short, 6-kb, pathogenicity island in the genome is linked to enterotoxigenic B. fragilis (ETBF). The role of the enterotoxin in B. fragilis virulence, however, remains to be determined, as the majority of clinical isolates lack ETBF genes and healthy individuals carry enterotoxin-posi...

Bartonella henselae is able to internalize endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), which are resistant to the infection of other common pathogens. Bacteroides fragilis is a gram-negative anaerobe belonging to the gut microflora. It protects from experimental colitis induced by Helicobacter hepaticus through the polysaccharide A (PSA). The aim of our study was to establish: 1) whether B. fragilis c...

A rapid multiplex PCR approach was developed to detect the bft gene subtypes in Bacteroides fragilis clinical isolates. This technique could be used to look at the epidemiology of enterotoxigenic strains of B. fragilis in clinical infections and whether there is a correlation between disease and the presence of B. fragilis enterotoxin.

Numerous hybrid and polypoid species are found within the Triticeae. It has been suggested that the H subgenome of allopolyploid Elymus (wheatgrass) species originated from diploid Hordeum (barley) species, but the role of hybridization between polyploid Elymus and Hordeum has not been studied. It is not clear whether gene flow across polyploid Hordeum and Elymus species has occurred following ...

Of 166 Bacteroides fragilis isolates, 26.2% of 103 isolates from blood and 20.6% of 63 extraintestinal isolates harbored the fragilysin gene (difference not statistically significant). Clinical characteristics and evolution were comparable in patients with B. fragilis bacteremia with or without this enterotoxin. Fragilysin seems not to be an important virulence factor in B. fragilis disease.

Molecular karyotypes of Hordeum bogdanii Wilensky, 1918 (2n = 14), and Hordeum brevisubulatum Link, 1844 ssp. brevisubulatum (2n = 28), were characterized by physical mapping of several repetitive sequences. A total of 18 repeats, including all possible di- or trinucleotide SSR (simple sequence repeat) motifs and satellite DNAs, such as pAs1, 5S rDNA, 45S rDNA, and pSc119.2, were used as probes...

The role of cell-free soluble factors (lymphokines) derived from mitogen-activated splenic cells of mice previously immunized against Bacteroides fragilis was evaluated in the treatment of B. fragilis intra-abdominal abscess (IAA). Neither clindamycin nor lymphokines alone were effective against an established B. fragilis IAA, but the combination of clindamycin and lymphokines decreased the abs...

We have studied the antimicrobial action of metronidazole against Bacteroides fragilis and Escherichia coli both in pure cultures and in combination. Concentrations of metronidazole above the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) produced a marked bactericidal effect on B fragilis at six hours. E coli however showed only a slight and transitory decrease in population when exposed to concentrat...

Dientamoeba fragilis (D. fragilis) is an anaerobic intestinal protozoan parasite that has been associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms. We report a case of post-infectious IBS caused by D. fragilis treated successfully with metronidazole. A 33-year-old African American male with an unremarkable past medical history was seen in the office with a three-month history of interm...
