PURPOSE To report two cases of herpes simplex keratitis following excimer laser application. METHODS Two immunocompetent patients with no history of ocular viral infection developed ulcers after LASIK and phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK), respectively. RESULTS Antiviral treatment was administered, and the lesions healed within 14 days. CONCLUSIONS These two cases suggest that herpes sim...

PURPOSE To investigate the effect of Fas and Fas ligand (FasL) deficiency on the development of herpes stromal keratitis and on the von Szily model of herpes retinitis in C57BL/6 mice, which are ordinarily resistant to development of both of these herpetic diseases. METHODS Anterior chamber inoculation of the right eye of each mouse with various titers of HSV-1 (KOS strain) was performed. Bot...

Topical administration of 0.1% or 1% chloroethyldeoxyuridine eyedrops caused a significant reduction in the severity of experimental herpes simplex iritis and stromal keratitis in rabbits. The healing effect caused by chloroethyldeoxyuridine was comparable to that obtained with 0.1% and 0.5% bromovinylde-oxyuridine eyedrops. The drug levels achieved in the anterior chamber fluid following topic...

The incidence of complicated herpes simplex keratitis appears to have increased and the important factor seems to be associated with the use of topical corticosteroid hormone. A good experimental model exists for the study of herpetic keratitis. The disease corresponds to the primary infection in man. The unfavorable effects of corticosteroid hormone on experimental herpetic keratitis is reported.

P ATIENTS WITH LYMPHOMA, leukemia, multiple myeloma, or other conditions characterized by an altered immunologic state have an increased susceptibility to the manifestations of common viral infections. In such patients, disseminated infections with the DNA viruses, herpes simplex, and herpes zoster have carried a poor prognosis.1’2 Various attempts have been made to treat these disseminated inf...

The inflammatory response to herpes simplex virus infection of the cornea was studied in athymic nude (nu/nu) and heterozygote (nu/+) BALB/c mice. Although athymic mice were highly susceptible to HSV infection and died 13 to 17 days after corneal inoculation, they failed to develop necrotizing keratitis of the cornea. Heterozygote mice survived the initial virual infection, but many of these mi...

Atypical dendritic keratitis has been described following herpes zoster infection. This is the first reported case of atypical dendritic keratitis following classical varicella infection It also provides the first light and electron microscopic description of the varicella-zoster dendritic corneal lesion. The diagnosis is substantiated by the clinical appearance of the lesion and by the presenc...

A new compound, 9-(3,4-dihydroxybutyl)guanine, has been synthesized and its antiherpes activity determined. 9-(3,4-Dihydroxybutyl)guanine was selectively phosphorylated by herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase and had a high affinity for this enzyme, with an inhibition constant of 1.5 microM. In cell culture, replication of different strains of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 was inhibited t...
