In the March 2001 issue of the Ceylon Medical Journal (Vol. 46 No.l), an advertisement titled "Preven tion is better than cure" inserted by New Delmon Hospital has misleading information. It says "Influenza vaccine 3,5 and 7 months'. Presumably it refers to the Haemophilus influenzae type B (or Hib) vaccine, which is totally different to the influenza vaccine, which is also available in Sri La...

Human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2) is an antimicrobial peptide with high activity and broad spectrum activity. hBD-2 expression may be highly elevated by microorganisms and inflammation. We reported that the majority of common vaccines used, including 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine and split influenza virus vaccine, could induce the expression of hB...

Four children with Down's syndrome and bacterial tracheitis are described. In three the infection was due to Haemophilus influenza. In patients with Down's syndrome presenting with stridor tracheitis should be considered and appropriate treatment started.

One of the most common causes of death in influenza patients is secondary bacterial pneumonia and the most common pathogens involved are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenza. To diagnose co infection with bacteria in a H1N1 case can be difficult but should be strongly suspected in a child who present with influenza like illness and lower respiratory tract s...

Levofloxacin resistance in Haemophilus influenzae has increased significantly in Taiwan, from 2.0% in 2004 to 24.3% in 2010 (p<0.001). Clinical and molecular investigations of 182 levofloxacin-resistant isolates revealed that the increase was mainly the result of the spread of several clones in the elderly population in different regions.

HP1 integrase promotes site-specific recombination of the HP1 genome into that of Haemophilus influenzae. The isolated C-terminal domain (residues 165-337) of the protein interacts with the recombination site and contains the four catalytic residues conserved in the integrase family. This domain represents a novel fold consisting principally of well-packed alpha helices, a surface beta sheet, a...

Purified 34-megadalton-plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid from antibiotic-resistant strains of Haemophilus influenzae transforms competent strains of H. influenzae more efficiently if the recipient strains contain certain other 30-megadalton plasmids.
