North Korea is located on the northern part of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. While tick-borne pathogens of medical and veterinary importance have been reported from China and South Korea, they have not been reported from North Korea. To screen for zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in North Korea, ticks were collected from domestic goats. A total of 292 (27 nymph, 26 male, 239 female) Haemaphys...

Koch originally described only the male of Haemaphysalis (Rhipistoma) elliptica (Koch, 1844), which he named Rhipistoma ellipticum. For the past century, however, this name has been considered a junior synonym of Haemaphysalis (Rhipistoma) leachi (Audouin, 1826), or a nomen nudum. We redescribe here the male and larva of H. (R.) elliptica and describe the female and nymph for the first time. Ou...

This work emphasizes the detection of Candidatus "Rickettsia amblyommii" in questing Haemaphysalis juxtakochi and Amblyomma mixtum. From February 2009 to December 2012, questing ticks were collected from the vegetation and leaf-litter of four protected forests and two grassy areas around the Panama Canal basin. DNA was extracted from Amblyomma mixtum, Amblyomma naponense, Amblyomma oblongogutta...

Rickettsia hoogstraalii is a tick-associated member of the spotted fever group rickettsiae that is geographically widely distributed. We report here the draft genome of R. hoogstraalii strain Croatica(T) (=DSM 22243 = UTMB 00003), which was isolated from Haemaphysalis sulcata ticks collected in Croatia.

The adult stage of Haemaphysalis leporis-palustris was studied. Two infestations consisted of male and female ticks on two rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Other two infestations consisted of only female ticks on two O. cuniculus. Females fed without males showed differences in some biological parameters when compared to females fed with males. Parthenogenesis is reported for the first time by ...

It has been shown experimentally from three repeated infestations that dogs were unable to develop effective resistance against dog ticks: rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806 and haemaphysalis leachi leachi Audouin, 1826. The number of successive engorged females recovered from dogs at the second and third infestations in both species were not significantly less (P>0.05) than the number re...

Specimens of the genus Haemaphysalis collected in Thailand were examined, and a key to the adult of 24 species belonging to six subgenera is presented. We propose that H. wellingtoni Nuttall & Warburton, 1908, be placed in the subgenus Kaiseriana; H. obesa Larrousse, 1925, be moved from Segalia to Kaiseriana; and that H. cornigera Neumann, 1897, be removed from the species list of Thailand.
