Burkholderia mallei, the etiologic agent of glanders, is a Gram-negative, nonmotile, facultative intracellular pathogen. Although glanders has been eradicated from many parts of the world, the threat of B. mallei being used as a weapon is very real. Here we present draft genome assemblies of 8 Burkholderia mallei strains that were isolated in Turkey.
BACKGROUND The in vivo diagnosis of glanders relies on the highly sensitive complement fixation test (CFT). Frequently observed false positive results are troublesome for veterinary authorities and cause financial losses to animal owners. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop a test with high specificity. Hence, a Western blot assay making use of a partly purified lipopolysaccaride (...
To assess the potency of the PPD-mallein produced in Brazil, five animals were from a property identified as a focus of glanders. These animals had suggestive clinical signs of the disease and the other five, from a property free from glanders, showed no clinical signs and were serology negative (control group). PPD-mallein from Burkholderia mallei was obtained by precipitation with trichloroac...
In 1911 Alfred Whitmore and C.S. Krishnaswami noticed that morphine addicts in Rangoon were afflicted by a lethal illness bearing a striking similarity to glanders!,2. Autopsy findings were characterized by widespread caseous consolidation of the lungs with abscesses in the liver, spleen, kidney and subcutaneous tissues. Glanders, an infection caused by Burkholderia mallei, is predominantly, a ...
letters reproduced here, the book's main focus is on the work of Rayer: five chapters are devoted to meticulous analysis of his contributions to nineteenth-century medical science. It is an impressive collection of observations on a wide variety of subjects: from his doctoral thesis on the history of morbid anatomy to the observations on human and animal teratology. His pioneering studies in co...
Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei are the causative organisms of Glanders and Melioidosis, respectively. Although now rare in Western countries, both organisms have recently gained much interest because of their unique potential as bioterrorism agents. These organisms are less familiar to medical and laboratory personnel than other select bioterrorism bacterial agents and thus h...
We collected epidemiologic and molecular data from Burkholderia mallei isolates from equines in Punjab, Pakistan from 1999 through 2007. We show that recent outbreaks are genetically distinct from available whole genome sequences and that these genotypes are persistent and ubiquitous in Punjab, probably due to human-mediated movement of equines.
background and objectives: in december 2010 four, lions and one tiger died at the tehran zoo. out of all samples, burkholderia mallei (causative agent of glanders) was isolated just from ulcer sample of the tiger which was imported to iran from russia. materials and methods: one nasal swab from a tiger and fifteen blood samples with anticoagulant belonging to one tiger and fourteen lions (four...
Bioluminescent imaging (BLI) technology is a powerful tool for monitoring infectious disease progression and treatment approaches. BLI is particularly useful for tracking fastidious intracellular pathogens that might be difficult to recover from certain organs. Burkholderia mallei, the causative agent of glanders, is a facultative intracellular pathogen and has been classified by the CDC as a C...
