We study monodromy action on abelian varieties satisfying certain bad reduction conditions. These conditions allow us to get some control over the Galois image. As a consequence we verify the Mumford–Tate conjecture for such abelian varieties.

(Ga,Mn)As is at the forefront of spintronics research exploring the synergy of ferromagnetism with the physics and the technology of semiconductors. However, the electronic structure of this model spintronics material has been debated and the systematic and reproducible control of the basic micromagnetic parameters and semiconducting doping trends has not been established. Here we show that see...

We calculate the electronic states of the Mn-doped semiconductors and show that resonant states are formed at the top of the down spin valence band due to magnetic impurities and that they give rise to a strong and long-ranged ferromagnetic coupling between Mn moments. We propose that the coupling of the resonant states, in addition to the intra-atomic exchange interaction between the resonant ...

Magnetization switching at the interface between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic metals, controlled by current-induced torques, could be exploited in magnetic memory technologies. Compelling questions arise regarding the role played in the switching by the spin Hall effect in the paramagnet and by the spin-orbit torque originating from the broken inversion symmetry at the interface. Of particula...

The experimental philosopher Robert Hooke (1635-1703) is known to have apprenticed to the leading painter Peter Lely on his first arrival in London in the late 1640s. Yet the relevance of Hooke's artistic training to his mature draughtsmanship and identity has remained unclear. Shedding light on that larger interpretive problem, this article argues for the attribution to Hooke of a figural draw...
