A synthetic sequence has been developed to selectively functionalize the furan ring of the natural product salvinorin A (2a). The synthetic routes described convert the furan ring in 2a into an N-sulfonylpyrrole, oxazole or an oxadiazole. In addition, a procedure has been found to remove the furan skeleton completely. Biological results indicate that replacement of the furan ring with an N-sulf...

A high-throughput multiparameter optimization of chemical oxidative polymerization conditions has been developed for a facile synthesis of furan homopolymers and furan/aniline copolymers using a combinatorial method. The polymerization yield, molecular structure, and properties of the polymers would be optimized against typical polymerization parameters, including oxidant species, medium specie...

A simple and sensitive method for simultaneous determination of furan and vinyl acetate (VA) in vapor phase of mainstream cigarette smoke with cold trap and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed. A Cambridge filter pad (CFP) was placed in front of the impingers of smoking machine to remove the particle phase from cigarette smoke. Furan and VA in vapor phase of mainstream ci...

Furan is a food and environmental contaminant and a potent carcinogen in animals. Lycopene is one dietary carotenoid found in fruits such as tomato, watermelon and grapefruit. The present study was designed to explore the protective effect of lycopene against furan-induced oxidative damage in streptozotocin (STZ)induced diabetic rat kidney. At the end of the experimental period (28 days), we fo...

Furan forms as a result of thermal treatment of food and induces harmful effects on organisms. In our work, lycopene, furan, and a combination of the two were given to diabetic male rats for 28 days. Hematological changes, total protein and cholesterol, triglyceride, and albumin levels, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase activit...

A method was proposed for the synthesis of substituted 2-(2-(furan-2-carbonyl)hydrazono)-4-oxobutanoic acids by reaction 2,4-dioxobut-2-enoic with furan-2-carbohydrazide. It found that undergo intramolecular cyclization in presence propionic anhydride to form corresponding N'-(2-oxofuran-3(2H)-ylidene)furan-2-carbohydrazides. The anti-inflammatory activity obtained compounds studied. have prono...

Previous model studies have suggested ascorbic acid as one of the major sources of furan, a possibly hazardous compound found in thermally processed foods (e.g. canned products, jars). The study showed that about 2 mmol mol(-1) furan was obtained when dry-heating ascorbic acid, while much lower amounts were formed upon pressure cooking, i.e. 58 micromol mol(-1) at pH 4 and 3.7 micromol mol(-1) ...

Furan is a heterocyclic organic compound produced in the chemical manufacturing industry and also found in a broad range of food products, including infant formulas and baby foods. Previous reports have indicated that the adverse biological effects of furan, including its liver tumorigenicity, may be associated with epigenetic abnormalities. In the present study, we investigated the persistence...

Furan is a 5-membered ring compound with high volatility. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently published a report on the occurrence of furan in a large number of thermally processed foods. However, the FDA's analytical method, using standard curve addition, is not suitable for high-throughput routine laboratory operations. We developed a rapid and improved method for determi...

5-Furan-2-yl[1,3,4]oxadiazole-2-thiol (Ia) and 5-furan-2-yl-4H-[1,2,4]-triazole-3-thiol (Ib) were synthesized from furan-2-carboxylic acid hydrazide. Mannich bases and methyl derivatives were then prepared. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by elemental analyses, IR and (1)H-NMR spectra. Their thiol-thione tautomeric equilibrium is described.
