—We examined aspects of the ecology of Notropis sabinae, the Sabine shiner, including habitat associations, population age structure, reproduction and diet in two east Texas streams from November 2001 through October 2002. Notropis sabinae exhibited no strong seasonal habitat associations, but generally were found in relatively shallow slow flowing runs and riffles. The population consisted of ...
The use of flowing liquid metal streams or “liquid walls” as a plasma contact surface is a very attractive option and has received considerable attention over the past several years both in the plasma physics and fusion engineering programs. A key issue for the feasibility of flowing liquid metal plasma facing component (PFC) systems, lies in their magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) behavior. The spatia...
It is shown experimentally that chemical information can be encoded and preserved in flowing liquid streams. It can be retrieved by chemical sensing arrays using correlation analysis. This finding is important for understanding of the mechanism of chemotaxis as practiced by some aquatic animals and also is a necessary prerequisite for construction of chemical plume tracking robots.
Swimming cyanobacteria do not have flagella. In principle, they could be propelled by streams of ions flowing from head to tail, i.e., by a self-electrophoretic mechanism. We have ruled out this possibility by showing that cells of a swimming Synechococcus species fail to drift in an external electric field.
Emerging Complex Event Processing (CEP) applications in cyber physical systems like Smart Power Grids present novel challenges for end-to-end analysis over events, flowing from heterogeneous information sources to persistent knowledge repositories. CEP for these applications must support two distinctive features – easy specification patterns over diverse information streams, and integrated patt...
Riparian zones can provide a protective buffer between streams and adjacent land-based activities by removing nitrate from shallow groundwater flowing through them. Catchment-scale waterquality models are useful tools for predicting catchment behaviour under various climatic conditions and land-use scenarios. In this paper, we use the Riparian Nitrate Model (RNM) to investigate the potential ro...
environments: they believe these are the only insects able to do so. As a further adaptation to living around flowing water, they withstand extremely high and fast floodwaters. “Through a combination of specialised shelter-seeking and use of silk tie-downs and drag lines, larvae avoid exposure to the strongest currents and quickly return themselves to the substrate if dislodged,” the researcher...
An increasing number of distributed applications aim to provide services to users by interacting with a correspondingly growing set of data-intensive network services. Such applications, as well as the services they utilize, are generally expected to handle dynamically varying demands on resources and to run in large, heterogeneous, and dynamic environments, where the availability of resources ...
The internal flow circulation dynamics of a liquid drop moving in a co- or counter-flowing gas stream has been numerically studied. The present work is concerned with the time accurate numerical solution of the two phase flow field at the low Mach number limit with an appropriate volume tracking method to capture motion and deformation of a liquid drop. It is shown that relative velocity betwee...
