A heavily calcified left atrial myxoma in a man aged 53 was diagnosed from the plain chest x-ray film and confirmed by echocardiography. There was also moderate mitral regurgitation caused by a floppy mitral valve. Before a systemic embolus is considered to have arisen from a floppy mitral valve, echocardiography must be performed.
BACKGROUND To assess whether a new floppy pigtail guidewire provides sufficient support for introduction of the 22F-steerable guide catheter (SG) into the left atrium and is less time-consuming during the MitraClip(®) -procedure without necessity of probing and inserting a stiff wire into the pulmonary vein. METHODS In group 1, traditional probing of the left upper pulmonary vein and insertio...
The echocardiographic features of a patient with severe aortic regurgitation due to a "floppy" aortic valve are presented. The salient abnormality observed was marked fluttering of the aortic valve cusps in diastole. Fluttering of the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve and left ventricular enlargement were noted. The diagnosis of a "floppy" aortic valve was substantiated at surgery.
We investigate a tracer particle moving on a two-dimensional square lattice created by network formers (NF). The positions of all network formers are randomly displaced by a small amount from the nodes of the network. Each NF can be in a "floppy" or "rigid" state, depending on the number of bonds connecting it to neighboring network formers. The NF that have more than a specified number of m bo...
Inspired by the ubiquity of composite filamentous networks in nature, we investigate models of biopolymer networks that consist of interconnected floppy and stiff filaments. Numerical simulations carried out in three dimensions allow us to explore the microscopic partitioning of stresses and strains between the stiff and floppy fractions cs and cf and reveal a nontrivial relationship between th...
purpose: to demonstrate an approach to the problems of cataract surgery in extensive iridoschisis methods: four eyes of 2 patients with extensive iridoschisis had cataract surgery by the same surgeon using the techniques that resembled techniques for phacoemulsification in intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (ifis). we used low flow parameters on phacoemulsification, used super-cohesive ophthal...
The results of clinical examinations and follow-up of 7 patients with floppy eyelid syndrome are presented. The most prominent features of the syndrome are floppy upper eyelids that can be easily everted, with papillary conjunctivitis and punctate keratopathy. The ocular changes seem to be the result of an underlying metabolic (or endocrine) disorder. In the patient with the longest follow-up p...
© 2014 Canadian Medical Association or its licensors CMAJ 1 A 52-year-old man presented with redness and irritation of the left eye. He had tried using artificial tear drops and gels without much benefit. On examination, the patient had redundant, wrinkled eyelid skin bilaterally with a greater amount on the affected side (Figure 1A). Ptosis of the left upper eyelid was evident, and the upper e...
